Be sure to see the Roman Amphitheatre, a 6,000-seat theatre nestled into a hill and dating back to the 2nd century A.D. Now restored, the theatre once again hosts performances. Leave time for the adjacent Jordan Museum of Popular Traditions, a showcase of local crafts.

Travel back thousands of years and wander the archaeological ruins of the Citadel, on the highest hill in Amman. The Roman Temple of Hercules and the Umayyad Palace are particularly impressive, as is the beautiful view at sunset. Cap off your evening with dinner at one of our renowned restaurants.

  • Dead Sea

    Have you dreamt of floating in the Dead Sea? From Amman, you are only about 45 km away. The sub-sea level, saltwater expanse is huge, and entry points are numerous. The Concierge Team at the InterContinental Jordan Hotel will recommend the best route and most accessible beaches.

  • Petra

    Petra, an enchanting ancient city where palaces, temples and tombs are carved into sandstone cliffs, was recently named one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. It is 254 km from Amman, suitable for an overnight side trip, with suggested viewing times of early morning and sunset.

  • Amman

    Though famous for its history and heritage, Amman is also a thoroughly modern city. Several high-end retail complexes are at your disposal, including the nearby Taj Mall and the new Al Abdali Mall, featuring an outer-space-themed, family entertainment centre.

Loose, lightweight clothing in modest styles is advisable in this semi-arid climate. Sun protection is a good idea, as are comfortable shoes for walking Amman's hills and for other adventures. Of course, a camera is essential to record the unforgettable sights of your Middle Eastern journey.

Pack swimming gear even in winter, since the temperature is fine for bathing all year round in the Dead Sea or at Aqaba.
Shoes
Pack a pair of comfy walking shoes, especially if you are planning to visit Petra or Wadi Rum.
Weather
Summer travellers should expect sunny, dry conditions, with high temperatures ranging from 30 to 35 Celsius. Winter visitors can expect temperatures to rise to about 17 Celsius during the day, with occasional rain. Snow falls on Amman about once a year.
