Disappointing stay, inconsistent and poor service

Problems encountered during stay:
- Unresponsive property, uncertainty about an upgrade
- No outlet for bedside lamp
- Incomplete coffee service and dirty coffee mugs
- Undisclosed need to “reserve” seat on airport shuttle

Uncertainty about upgrade
Three days prior to my stay, I tried the online chat to request a room upgrade, and was told it was not possible to do because I booked the room through my airline, but perhaps if I contacted the property they could do something for me. So after two emails and no response, I called the property directly and asked if I could upgrade to a deluxe room. "Maybe" was the response, "we won't know until the day of your stay." I asked that they at least make a note in my reservation that I'd like an upgrade. The upgrade was available at checkin, although the person at the front desk was surprised I'd been told "maybe".

Outlet (in)availability
In the room, the right side night stand had a lamp that did not work. It turned out the lamp didn't work because it was unplugged -- there was no outlet behind the nightstand or within 6 feet of the night stand. The only outlets on that wall were either the fully occupied one behind the left night stand, or the one in the extreme corner of the room, also fully occupied by a floor lamp and the coffee service on a little table. My request for an extension cord was resolved when Maintenance brought an orange utility extension cord and ran it to the corner in place of the plug for the coffee service. I travel with a little power strip in my business pack and used that to give myself more than one "outlet" from the extension cord.

Incomplete coffee service and dirty coffee mugs
When I decided to make in-room coffee, I discovered that no creamer or sugar packets had been provided. Moreover, inspection of the mugs showed that they were dirty, with what felt like an incomplete rinse in the dishwasher. I hand washed the mugs and made coffee with sugar and creamer packets from my carry-on bag. I left a note for the housekeeper the next morning that I would like sugar and creamer packets left with the coffee refresh. The sugar and creamer packets did show up, but when I picked up an inverted coffee mug off the paper coaster, I saw rings of coffee on the coaster and inside the mug evidence that the mug had not been washed. Both mugs were dirty. I complained at the front desk about the service being refreshed with unwashed or poorly washed mugs and gave the attendant at the front desk the most dirty of the mugs. She offered me a breakfast coupon as compensation, saying “you made your reservation through a third-party site, so we can’t discount the cost of your stay.” The next day, the last day of my visit, there was replacement coffee and the mugs seemed clean, but once again there were no sugar and creamer packets.

“Complimentary Airport Shuttle” needed unmentioned reservation
“Complimentary 24-hour airport transportation” is listed on the hotel’s website. No mention of a reservation requirement was made at check-in. The evening before my departure I gave my room number at the front desk and asked specifically about the 4:30 am shuttle run to the airport. I was told, yes, there is a run at that time, to which I responded, good, because that’s the one I need. Again, no mention was made about needing a reservation. The next morning I checked out, and the clerk looked startled and unhappy, wanting to know if I was intending on taking the 4:30 am shuttle, then asking for my room number. The shuttle arrived, my luggage was placed in the back, I took a seat, only to have the desk clerk come out and demand that the “unreserved” passengers get off to accommodate a family who “did make reservations ahead of time”. Off I came, and my luggage, to wait another 20 minutes with another family and guest for a second driver to be called in to use the other shuttle to get all of us to the airport.

The dirty coffee service, inconsistent attention to detail, the electrical outfitting of the room, and the fiasco of the airport shuttle did not leave the Crowne Plaza high on my list of places to stay on my business trips. I will not be choosing that property again when I return to Cleveland.

Nice hotel!

I was very satisfied with my stay the Crowne Plaza. The rooms were modern and clean, including the bathroom and the room was nicely insulated from the adjoining rooms because I never heard a sound from my room (a major pet peeve of mine in the avg. hotel). Staff was helpful and friendly and addressed the minor problem I encountered.
