Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Holiday Inn Express I've stayed at many Holiday Inn Express hotels, and this was the best experience by far. Front desk VERY friendly and helpful; the breakfast was better than most. For example, the hard-boiled eggs were perfect (yolk not green!). Plenty of parking and not far from campus. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Poor Attitude from Manager I left some lower scores based on two things. 1. Bad encounter with a man at the front counter. 2. Room had strong odor of cigarette smoke. The lady I spoke to before the manager was very nice and helpful, the lady AFTER the manager was there was also extremely nice and helpful. I accidentally booked my room a day in advance of when I was going to be staying, the lady at the front desk was able to switch my reservation for the next night, no problem. I was very thankful. She even offered to let me move my things into the room a little early if nobody booked the room the night before. No promises of course. She said to just check with the front desk and they could work something out. Unfortunately the man at the front desk the next day wouldn't even hear me out. I was met with curt behavior and several rude encounters thereafter. I was so offended I couldn't even look at the guy anytime after, he was so rude. I just hope no other guests receive this kind of service. The room I booked was the King Suite with the whirlpool. The room was clean but didn't smell clean. It smelled like cigarette smoke so I left the window open to air it out and the fan running. It only made it worse. There's no getting over that gross smell when you are trying to relax and enjoy your vacation. February 25, 2014

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Exceptional Stay 3 couples came to the area for a Navigator Conference. We decided to choose a location that would be central to all the attractions that we wanted to see. We choose Holiday Inn Express-Berkeley. When we arrived in the parking lot, we were greeted by the Manager. (Never had seen that happen before and I have stayed in lots of HIE's.) When we checked in we asked for upgrades and all our rooms were upgraded. Everything about out stay was above and beyond what we expected. The manager was ever present and accommodating. When we were loading the car to leave, we were all thanked for choosing his location. Even got handshakes and hugs. Would I stay there again -- in a heartbeat. Best location I ever stayed at. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Clean, comfortable, responsive staff Since our son & his family live in the area we frequently visit and stay at this hotel. It can get a bit pricey for its value on weekends that Cal has a home football game but is reasonable at other times. There are few other hotels in the Berkeley area that offer decent accomodations at a reasonable price (except for football weekends). Location is good, rooms are clean and more spacious than most of the other hotels, and the breakfast is more than adequate but not exceptional. We have tried some of the lessor hotels in the area and have found them inadequate for our needs. The staff are friendly and responsive. Parking has never been a problem. January 7, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Frequent Guest I stay at this hotel several times a year for about a week each time. I have been very pleased with the accommodations. But the thing that sets this hotel apart is the personal service on the part of the manager and staff. I complemented the manager on the helpful and friendly manner the staff displays. The manager told me that the staff knew this was the hospitality business and if one did not want to be hospitable, one should get a different job. Would that the manager of all hotels had that attitude. January 3, 2014
