Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by JohnQD Clean comfortable room, excellent caring staff
This location was in the procss of being remodeled or refurbished. We had some difficulty locating the main entrance and find clean parking areas. This was understandable and under the circumstances things were very well managed and comfortable. Your staff quickly realized that we were looking for a quiet area to relax and get good rest and assigned ua a room separated from an area in the hotel where a sizable group were housed. This was thoughtful and we appreciated it. Your bed and furnature were extremely comfortable and your heating/cooling unit was quite quiet and effective. Thank you!

I have stayed at the Holiday Inn Express (HIE) a few other times and had very good experiences. I generally shop around for hotel rooms, but liked the HIE in Golden Valley Minn enough that I joined the loyalty program and just booked it the last few times I was in the area.
My experience this time was a disappointment. When I stayed last summer I knew there were renovations going on, but they were limited. This time the grounds were full of construction equipment and the desk and dining room were in temporary quarters. Keeping a hotel open in such circumstances seems a questionable practice to me. Fortunately, I was staying over a weekend and not around much during the day. Otherwise I can only imagine the noise and disturbances. As it was, I had to dodge a construction vehicle while trying to move out.
I checked in in the evening. My key card did not work in my room. I told the woman at the desk, since I was picking up my wife and would be returning late. She said someone was there 24 hours and she would have someone look at the doorlock. When I returned late in the evening, the lock still did not work. After some discussion, the man working the desk gave me a new room, saying that only my renovated room had the problem with the door lock. The new room was exactly the same and two doors down from the old one. Why the woman staffing the desk earlier did not simply give me a new room is beyond me. This would have prevented the scramble and need to move rooms at midnight.
Neither my wife nor myself like the new room design. The lighting was the worst element--it was so harsh. We use CFLs at home, so we know that some are better than others. Somehow, HIE has chosen the harshest possible and overlit the rooms as well. I like shopping at Costco and Target, but I do not want the light in my hotel room to resemble their entryways. Turning on the light in the bathroom at night made me feel as though I was on Broadway--hardly conducive to sleep.
I am ok with a modern, minimalist contemporary style room in principle, but the renovation overdoes it. It is not only a jarring contrast to the way this HIE's rooms were before, it is simply trying too hard to be contemporary. Such styling and furnishing work best when quality materialis are used. The ones in the new rooms looked cheap and tacky, making the entire room seem as though it was restyled to be cheap and easy to maintain. I like wood floors in the entry way to my house, for instance, but in a hotel room it just makes for a noisier entry way. One can hear people opening the door and dropping their luggage on the hard floor.
i may stay at this HIE again, but it is not likely and certainly not until I am absolutely sure the renovations are done. I will have to start the search for accommodations for my stays in the MPLS area once again, and hope that I find something more comfortable and reliable.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Jim construction When the remodel is completed it will probably be a wonderful location.
Too much noise early in the morning. Tracking through construction debris to get to room. All in all everyone was doing there're part to get the remodel done with s little impact as possoble. I just feel that the rate should be deeply cut during the process. Especially with the early morning construction noise, the very filthy halls and entrance, etc. The room was nice. I love the new LED above the beds. It's wonderful to light the room indirect light that.

The hotel was under renovation during our visit; however, the friendly staff definitely made up for the construction mess. The room we had was newly renovated and very clean and comfortable. Would definitely stay again.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by J Minnesota under construction but great service
I was disappointed to see that the hotel was being remodeled and apprehensive that the quality of our stay would be affected, but the staff and construction crew were very courteous and accomodating. We were in a brand new, very nice guest room and enjoyed a variety of breakfast options at the free breakfast. Pool was nice and had it to ourselves! Great time over all.
