Neighborhoods
Explore our neighborhood.
Since its earliest days, ambition and innovation have nurtured the cultural heartbeat in East Liberty. Industry’s biggest names—Carnegie, Heinz, Mellon—moved into our valley along the Allegheny River, looking for a break from the overcrowded city nearby. After settling in, they invested in the new borough’s nightlife, entertainment and theater scene. During the middle of this fun, however, Prohibition laws demanded that the show go “underground,” leading to innovative secret drinking clubs. Today, the neighborhood is reinventing itself with a new cultural heartbeat full of boutiques, unique dining options and rehabilitated historic buildings.
Founded in 1895, the Carnegie Museums are a part of Andrew Carnegie's lasting gift to Pittsburgh. The Carnegie Museums complex is located in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh and encompasses the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and the Hall of Sculpture and Architecture.
Experience the culture and refinement of the Gilded Age at the Frick Art & Historical Center, located on beautifully landscaped gardens in Pittsburgh's East End. The museum and its multiple collections are the legacy of Helen Clay Frick, daughter of Henry Clay Frick, one of America's greatest industrialists and art collectors.
Every visit is a wild, new adventure at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. From adorable to awe-inspiring, visitors are sure to roar for more after a day with the animals. Situated on 77 acres in Pittsburgh’s Highland Park neighborhood, the Zoo features approximately 4,000 mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, and amphibians from all corners of the world.
Commissioned as a gift to his city in 1893 by steel baron Henry Phipps, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is one of the nation's oldest and largest Victorian "glass houses." Silvered domes of glass enclose 13 garden rooms brimming with thousands of exotic plants and flowers.
A great neighborhood deserves a great theater. That’s the cornerstone of the Kelly Strayhorn Theater. Named for two of Pittsburgh’s most celebrated talents—dancer Gene Kelly and composer Billy Strayhorn—KST contributes to East Liberty’s renaissance and redefines theater with provocative original programming and a social experience unlike any other venue.
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra prides itself in artistic excellence, a rich history of the world’s finest conductors and musicians, and a strong commitment to the Pittsburgh region. Today, the Pittsburgh Symphony remains among the world’s top orchestras, and has even been named by some as the “Greatest American Orchestra.”
The Heinz Hall, home to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO), is a concert hall and performing arts center in the Cultural District in Downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Known for its brilliance and splendor, the Heinz Hall presents around 200 shows every year.
Carnegie Music Hall, a Historic Landmark, is located in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. The Music Hall is part of The Carnegie, and is housed in the same beautiful structure that includes the Carnegie Museum, the Carnegie Library, and the Carnegie Lecture Hall.
You’ll often find a line of people waiting to eat at BRGR. Burger-patty options include dry-aged prime beef, turkey, salmon and black bean-corn falafel. Feeling hungry? Try the Button Buster, a beef burger topped with braised beef short ribs, white cheddar cheese, béarnaise sauce and crispy onions.
Exploring and expanding on the cuisines of the Mediterranean region, Casbah is one of Pittsburgh's premier dining destinations. The menu changes daily, offering imaginative new tastes and textures using the season's finest ingredients. Menu selections include a variety of meat, seafood, vegetarian entrees, and house-made desserts.
For over 55 years, Mineo's Pizza House has been serving quality pizza to the city of Pittsburgh. Mineo’s pizza is fully loaded, featuring briny, chewy crust with a hint of cornmeal, spicy tomato sauce, abundant super-salty cheese (secret ingredient: aged provolone) and “buried” toppings. The pies are so popular that they can be overnighted to any U.S. city.
It’s an edible Pittsburgh institution. You can get their signature sandwich with salami, or with turkey, or roast beef or even with no meat at all. At this historic restaurant, it’s not their huge, layered sandwich without a generous serving of crunchy, tart coleslaw and crisp French Fries piled high atop soft Italian bread.
