From the awe-inspiring Great Barrier Reef to the verdant beauty of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, Townsville is the perfect location from which to explore the far north of Queensland. Located 350 kilometres south of Cairns, this coastal city boasts almost constant sunshine and tends to be much drier than other parts of the state. In winter, the pleasant south-east trade winds are refreshing, but it gets very hot in summer, although dramatic electrical thunderstorms help cool things down.

Townsville: city layout

The striking red granite monolith of Castle Hill overlooks Townsville and makes a striking contrast to the azure blue waters of Cleveland Bay. Eight kilometres offshore is the very popular holiday destination of Magnetic Island, known locally as Maggie – a large rocky island with 2,000 permanent residents, a national park and plenty of places to stay.

The Ross River flows through the centre of town. Flinders Street in the CBD (Central Business District) is the city’s main thoroughfare. The best restaurants, bars and shops tend to be around Palmer Street and Gregory Street, positioned on either side of the Ross River.

A 15-minute stroll from the CBD is the Strand, a two-kilometre long beachfront promenade with recreation areas, a water park and a nice selection of picnic spots and restaurants where you can eat alfresco by the ocean. A short drive to the north of Townsville are the Northern Beaches and the Paluma Range National Park.

Townsville is full of surprising discoveries for the discerning shopper. You’ll find an eclectic mix of independent boutiques stocking vintage fashion along Palmer and Gregory Streets, while all the latest fashion labels are on offer at the City Arcade shopping mall. Townsville also has a great selection of outdoor markets.

The Riverway Moonlight Markets are held on the third Friday evening of the month from May to December, and the Willows Markets on Sunday mornings. Visit both to explore the cultural diversity that the region has to offer.

Stockland Townsville Shopping Centre, located in the suburb of Aitkenvale a short drive south of Townsville’s CBD, has a branch of Australian department store Myers as well as supermarkets Coles and Woolworths.

Townsville’s best retail experiences

It’s a great place to pick up delicious fresh tropical produce, artisan crafts, jewellery and fashion. Grab some takeaway food and enjoy the cooling ocean breezes as you browse the stalls

● Start your shopping adventure at City Arcade, Townsville’s newest fashion precinct. It’s next door to City Lane restaurant and bar hub.

 ● Womenswear boutiques Stellar Moda and Le Val on Palmer both stock fun and playful styles. Together by Jaxx has bohemian-inspired fashion, while A Few Beautiful Things is packed with unusual antiques, vintage homeware and gifts.

● The Strand Night Markets are held on the first Friday evening of the month from May to December, at Strand Park.

Townsville is a very friendly and well kept town with some interesting refurbished 19th-century buildings and excellent museums, including the family-friendly Museum of Tropical Queensland.

Hiking to the top of Castle Hill is a great way to orient yourself in Townsville, with spectacular 360-degree views of the city and its surroundings. Try to time your arrival for dawn or sunset.

Townsville is best known as the tropical gateway to the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, and there are many opportunities to dive or snorkel. Popular diving spots are Yongala shipwreck and around Magnetic Island.

● Take a 20-minute ferry ride to Magnetic Island. You can explore the beautiful bays by hiring a sea kayak or a sailing catamaran – look out for dolphins, turtles, coral reef fish and sea eagles.

● Visit the Billabong Sanctuary, a native wildlife park 17 kilometres south of Townsville. You can get up close with kangaroos, cassowaries, koalas and some really huge crocodiles .

● If you want to experience the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef without getting your toes wet, check out the city-centre Reef HQ Aquarium, one of the best aquariums in the South Pacific.

Townsville is a popular tourist destination, so there’s no shortage of places to stay. Accommodation in Townsville takes all forms, including high-rise chain hotels, serviced apartments, beachfront resorts and budget-priced backpacker hostels.

Depending on whether you’re visiting for business or pleasure, hotels in Townsville tend to be located in the city centre, near the Strand or on Magnetic Island. The CBD, around Flinders Street, is handy for business and transport facilities, but also within striking distance of the major tourist sights. Plentiful dining and entertainment options are nearby too.

The Strand – stretching for two kilometres along the foreshore – includes a jetty, recreational parks, cafés and swimming pools. It’s quieter than the centre of town and a good choice for families.

You can also lose yourself in the tropical island paradise of <b>Magnetic Island</b>, where there are numerous accommodation options, from rental cottages to full-blown resorts.

Townsville's first “laneway precinct”, City Lane is a great place to spend a balmy evening. Try funky, industrial-style bar Shaw & Co, Italian restaurant Donna Bionda, US burger-and-beer joint The Courtyard or sushi specialist Sakana.

You can start the day with one of the best breakfasts you’ll ever have at Jam Corner. The coffee is excellent too. For lunch, stock up at one of Townsville’s farmers’ markets, then enjoy a picnic at Strand Park with a view of the ocean. In the evening, discover a sophisticated range of restaurants along Palmer Street, including Seasoned, which has a lovely atmosphere and friendly staff.

Townsville has a thriving arts and cultural scene with two major entertainment venues and some dynamic art galleries. There’s plenty of variety for music lovers too, from the long-running Australian Festival of Chamber Music to the monthly dance party Full Moon Down Under.

Big-name comedians and musicians perform at the Townsville Entertainment & Convention Centre, which also hosts Iron Cowboy bull riding competitions.

You’ll find local and international art exhibitions at the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, housed in a handsome old bank building in the town centre. The Pinnacles Gallery specialises in contemporary art, with an emphasis on interactivity.

Most of Townsville’s best nightspots are on Flinders Street East. Check out the Tropical Tuesdays at the stylish Heritage Bar: tropical house music, tropical pizza and tropical beverages. Mad Cow is a lively Western-themed bar where you can cut loose on the dance floor or relax over a beer playing pool.

Townsville’s best cultural experiences

● Townsville Civic Theatre and Riverway Arts Centre present a lively mix of theatre, classical music, opera and comedy – both local and touring productions.

● Head to the Seaview Hotel on the Strand on Sunday afternoons for their popular live music sessions in the garden.

● The community-oriented Townsville Cultural Fest in August celebrates the diversity of Australian life with music, dance and global eats.

As the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, Townsville is the perfect place to embark on a diving or snorkelling holiday. The five Northern Beaches – Bushland, Saunders, Toolakea, Toomulla and Balgal – offer a mix of rugged bush, sandy seaside and family fun. Further north still, tropical rainforest and wetlands await.

If you’d like to experience the Queensland of years past, Charters Towers, 140 kilometres west of Townsville, is the place. Once a booming gold town, it’s packed with interesting historic buildings and cowboy-style experiences. Best nature escapes from Townsville

● Escape the coastal heat by heading to the cool mountain air of the Paluma Range National Park. You can swim in Little Crystal Creek and Big Crystal Creek and walk through rainforest in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.

● Bursting from thick rainforest, awe-inspiring Wallaman Falls is Australia’s highest single-drop waterfall, at 268 metres high. Great walks nearby range from a moderate stroll into the gorge to the strenuous Wallaman Falls section of the long-distance Wet Tropics Great Walk.

● For a taste of the Australian Outback, visit Woodstock Trail Rides half an hour south of Townsville. You can go horse-riding on this huge property, or try your hand at cattle mustering and sheep shearing.
