Very comfortable and clean room. Convenient location. Restaurant/bar on premises. Would have been nice to have a small complementary breakfast, but with the restaurant, I assume that was not possible. Pool and fitness center looked very nice, although we did not have time to use them.

This Holiday Inn is unusual in both good and bad.
The good things, we arrived at 730pm Friday April18, the girl at the front desk was friendly, knowledgeable and it felt she really wanted to us to be in Midland and happy we were at the hotel. This continued where in the room we had a greeting from our housekeeper welcoming us and the next day another note from a different housekeeper telling us to have a good day. I have never see this at any hotel and for something I am sure did not take them long to do, was a great touch. The hotel was clean and considering its location very quiet. I say this about the location as it is walking distance to the Midland Mall and the movie theater. In addition to not hearing any outside noises the hotel itself was quiet. The room size (1 king bed) was a nice size and the room had a microwave, mini fridge and sink area. The pool area was large with a pool shaped like Michigan (a mitten) and there was a game area, small health club and guest laundry.
Now the bad, I have not stayed at a Holiday Inn or any hotel where the mattress was so soft it was difficult to sleep, it felt like it was 20 plus years old and that cannot be since the hotel is either new or newly renovated. In addition, as is becoming standard, is to have 2 firm and 2 soft pillows on the bed, except all were so soft and as a matter of fact too soft. I do not like a very firm bed, but it had no firmness at all. The next thing is, again comparing to Holiday Inn's and again most hotels, no breakfast included in the rate. There is a restaurant attached to the hotel and plenty of places in the area to eat, but how unusual not to serve breakfast, even if just continental. I do travel often and most hotels do offer breakfast even with a fridge, microwave in room and a restaurant attached.
The next is a combination of a guest issue along with a hotel issue. The hotel is completely non smoking, which for me is great. However smokers tended to gather immediately outside the side door where we, along with others were using it for our entrance as it was closest to the elevator. If an area could be designated for smoking and signs posted about the closeness to the building it would be great for those of us who had to walk through clouds of smoke. Guests should do this automatically but do not usually.
