Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum

100 Fort St Buffalo, Buffalo, WY 82834

In the spring of 1900, Pharmacist Theodore James Gatchell (Jim), opened the first drugstore in Johnson County. The Buffalo Pharmacy became a popular place for cowboys, lawmen, settlers, cattle barons, and famous Army scouts. Jim became a trusted friend to the region’s Native Americans, local residents, and those that passed through town. Many of those that befriended Jim brought him several gifts over the years. Those gifts help tell Jim's story inside this museum.

US Highway 16 - Scenic Drives

The Black to Yellow Region - The best part of your road trip, with the most scenic and breath-taking views will be this stretch of road from Buffalo, WY through the Bighorn Forest! This amazing drive is filled with jaw dropping vistas, and elevations gain that take you up, up, up to the top of canyons and back down into the forest. I found myself gasping with excitement around every bend in the road, as it opens it up to more big sky, steep cliffs, and untamed Wyoming scenery.

The Dry Creek Petrified Tree Environmental Education Area is located about 13 miles east of Buffalo, Wyoming. The site offers visitors an opportunity to discover the history of the northeastern Wyoming landscape. About 60 million years ago these red sage hills and sagebrush country were a jungle-like swamp with towering Metasequoia trees. Many of these trees still exist as petrified wood. A great place for hiking and enjoying the beautiful scenery, or bring a picnic and simply enjoy nature.
