While in Chambersburg in 1863, Confederate General Robert E. Lee decided to go to Gettysburg, where his troops lost a massive battle that is considered the turning point of the Civil War.Chambersburg's most unique role in history occured on July 30 1864, when Chambersburg was burned on the orders of General Jubal A. Early, in retaliation of burning of Virginia. On that fateful day, Chambersburg became the only town north of the Mason-Dixon line burned by Confederate soldiers.
