Chaw'se Indian Grinding Rock

Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills eight miles east of Jackson. The park nestles in a little valley 2,400 feet above sea level with open meadows and large valley oaks that once provided the native Americans of this area with an ample supply of acorns. The park was created in 1968 and preserves a great outcropping of marbleized limestone with some 1,185 mortar holes -- the largest collection of bedrock mortars in North America.

Bear River Reservoir

Lower Bear River Reservoir is a largest lake of 727 surface acres with a shoreline of about 9 miles. Outdoor activities inclues fishing, portaging light, flatwater paddle boats, open to all types of water craft and skiing, unimproved ramp is available below Pardoes Point Campground, camping is available at three-single family and one group, concessionaire operated. Normal season is May 1-November 15.

Preston Castle

The castle was built between 1890 and 1894. In 1890, the 230 acre parcel of land where the Preston Castle stands was purchased from the Ione Coal & Iron Company for $30 per acre with 100 acres donated. The land was purchased to house the Preston School of Industry, established by the State Legislature as a progressive action toward rehabilitating, rather than simply imprisoning, juvenile offenders. Preservation of the castle means saving a historically significant California landmark.
