Neighborhoods
Sophisticated, art nouveau Bulevardi is steps away from our design hotel, a centerpiece of Helsinki’s trendsetting downtown. Holding on to its original incarnation as a Parisian-like promenade, Bulevardi captures timeless classics with the Old Masters in Sinebrychoff Museum and renowned pastries in Café Ekberg. On our doorstep, the Design District thrives as young Finnish brands in swanky showrooms produce the ultimate in cool Scandi style. The east side of classy Esplanadi is lined with the big-name stores and smart eateries. On the west, it rubs shoulders with Hietalahti shipyard, a gem of industrial design, with imposing icebreakers and the Baltic Sea as urban backdrops. It is this precious patchwork of styles that inspired the chic minimalism of our décor and hip fusions of our menus.
The Sinebrychoff Art Museum overflows with timeless European artwork in gilded frames – look out for masterpieces by Cranach and Watteau. Next to it is the much-loved, pocket-sized Sinebrychoff Park. Join Helsinki locals as they sledge down its gentle slopes in winter or spread out picnic blankets to feast in summer.
Sprawled over 6 islands, the austere 18th-century fortress, its ramparts, bastions and barracks offers a clutch of history museums and scenic walking trails. A ferry ride from Market Square, it’s blissful at dusk as the sun falls into the sea, and there are bars and restaurants aplenty to see you through to the early hours.
Criss-crossing 25 streets, the Design District is Helsinki’s self-proclaimed design central. It’s a treasure trove of avant-garde boutiques, vintage finds, art galleries and cool coffee shops. Splurge on colorful Nordic ceramics from Marimekko or sleek glassware at Iittala, and pop into the Design Museum shop for great arty books.
Blasted out of solid rock in 1969, the circular Temppeliaukio Church resembles a wacky UFO topped with a shallow copper dome. Venture in to see its raw rock walls and granite altar slab, and on sunny days, catch the sunlight streaming through 180 skylights. Organ concerts here are a treat, as the acoustics are second to none.
Opened in 1880 to serve a Russian garrison, the Alexander remains a staple of Helsinki cultural life. With an elegant Imperial décor, it has ceilings ornamented with gilded cupids, red-velvet drapes and its very own ghost. A gloriously eccentric schedule includes opera, rousing chamber-music concerts and tributes to David Bowie.
Combining neoclassic and functional design, the rotund, white Swedish Theatre is the leading Swedish-speaking stage in Finland. Opened in 1860, its frescoed auditorium offers serious drama along with international musicals. Indulge in a sparkling wine at the bar before joining in renditions of “Mamma Mia” as the actors hit the stage.
Classy Espa is Helsinki’s grand promenade area. Gracefully tree-lined and scattered with notable sculptures, it’s always buzzing with local life. Look out for foodie festivals and free rock or blues concerts throughout the year. It’s best in summer for picnics on the grass to the strains of soft jazz flowing into the Nordic night.
Sitting under the shadow of cranes in the dockyards of Hietalahti, Nosturi is a former cargo store turned barn-like music venue known for its eclectic gig choices. Here you’ll find any genre from heavy rock to hip hop or rave, with giant screens pumping live music into the crowded bars. Perch on the balcony for optimum views of the bands.
Cute, dainty Café Ekberg opened in 1852 and is a Bulevardi favorite with ornate ceilings and marble-topped tables. Its time-proven specialties include flaky Napoleon cake and delicious macaroons – a sweet finishing touch to a city stroll. Sit in and enjoy fine coffee or bag a sourdough roll with cured beef to eat in Esplanade Park.
Gaijin is the second restaurant of Tomi Björck and Matti Wikberg, renowned chefs who introduced chilli peppers onto Helsinki’s culinary scene. Their tasting menus take a fresh look at timeless Asian classics, introducing inspired dishes like wasabi and soy marinated beef tartar or chicken yakitori. Enjoy with a nip of chilled Japanese sake.
Saaga brings the frozen landscapes of Lapland right to your Helsinki dinner table. Radiating the warmth of a traditional Sami hut, you’ll be lulled into a polar-night’s dream with flickering candles, antlers on the wooden walls and cozy reindeer furs. Baltic herring or Lappish cheese served with cloudberries up the culinary stakes.
Hietalahti Market is a thoroughly contemporary food hall combining traditional wooden stalls with red-brick walls and a plateful of charisma. It’s the place to sample Helsinki’s gourmet trends and mingle with discerning locals to tuck into smoked salmon at a pop-up stall or enjoy Saturday-night tasting events with DJ music.
