Hotel Indigo Savannah Historic District
Hotel Indigo Savannah Historic District
Like our Spanish-moss-draped city herself, Hotel Indigo® Savannah Historic District is the perfect mix of old and new. Our building—known to locals as the "Grand Lady on the Bay" due to her sweeping size—was once 19th-century mega-merchant Simon Guckenheimer's dry goods storage house and shop, which was filled with everything the South made best, from tobacco to canned peaches. The 1940s and '50s brought a grocery store with the city's first true coffeehouse. Now, the Grand Lady stands as a charming boutique hotel with modern style in a vibrant Ellis Square setting that reflects the essence of Savannah's renowned historic district. After a delicious breakfast or cocktail at our lobby bar, immerse yourself in our neighborhood's rich culture at City Market, located right next door. Then embark on one of the many fascinating tours Savannah has to offer; at least five of the city's iconic squares are located within roughly five blocks of our front door. Learn about the city's storied past before making your way down original cobblestone paths to famous River Street, where you can watch ships enter and exit the harbor while savoring Southern comfort food in restaurants that were once historic warehouses.

Neighborhoods
When John Oglethorpe sailed from Britain and landed by a towering bluff in 1733, the city of Savannah was born—and with a waterfront location in a climate perfect for growing cotton, our neighborhood quickly became one of the busiest harbors in the country. The sounds of ships entering and leaving port still fill the air as you sample authentic Southern cuisine on the iconic River Street and discover local artisans and music at City Market. At the Telfair Museums, explore both modern masterpieces and classical architecture before tasting homegrown craft beers at Moon River Brewing Company, just steps away from our front door.
In a city so rich with history, tales of ghosts and hauntings abound. Believers and skeptics alike should take a ghost tour or pub crawl through Savannah, where you’ll visit buildings well known for their resident spirits and strange occurrences. You never know who or what you may see.
Art is woven into the fabric of Savannah, and one could say it all started at the Telfair Museums. The Jepson Center exhibits work from such contemporary artists as Roy Lichtenstein, William Christenberry and Jasper Johns. At the Owen-Thomas House, take a journey through time while exploring authentic 19th-century rooms. For American Impressionist pieces, sculptures and historic architecture, be sure to visit the Telfair Academy.
Take a walk down River Street, Savannah’s most popular entertainment, dining and shopping district. Get your local crafts — jewelry, soaps or clothing, perhaps — at the open-air River Street Market Place. Each March, head here to experience one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades and celebrations in the country.
The sounds of ships entering and exiting the Port of Savannah fill the city’s air. Established by James Edward Oglethorpe in the 1730s, the harbor quickly became one of the most active commercial ports in the country. With so many commodities to manage, traders lined the waterside with warehouses, including the one that was transformed into Hotel Indigo.
City Market, located right next to the hotel, regularly hosts outdoor, live music of all kinds. On River Street, don’t miss jazz on the street and events like the Savannah Blues Weekend, and enjoy holiday tunes during St. Patrick’s Day, the Fourth of July, Christmas and more.
In Savannah, historic cathedral bells ring throughout the city. Christ Church Episcopal, the “Mother Church of Georgia,” houses a Revere Bell, designed by Paul Revere in 1792. The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist’s steeple bell was made in 1900 and weighs over 4,700 pounds. Enjoy their tones echoing around you as explore the city’s classic architecture.
Sip on some of Georgia’s finest craft beers at one of Savannah’s local breweries. At Moon River Brewing Company, try the Yoga Pants American Golden Ale, Swamp Fox IPA and the Captain’s Porter paired with a delicious variety of brewpub fare. Head to Southbound Brewing Company for a brewery tour and taste Scattered Sun Belgian Wit or Black Circle Dark Ale.
Don’t leave Savannah without tasting the world-famous River Street Sweets pralines, made with local Georgia pecans. You can buy them hot and fresh after watching how they’re prepared in-store. While at the shop, you should also try the homemade peanut brittle, caramel, cakes and pies.
Enjoy delicious, family-style Southern fare at one of Savannah’s best restaurants, The Wilkes House. With everything from crispy fried chicken to fresh okra gumbo to sweet potato soufflé, you will have a truly authentic, Southern culinary experience. Don’t forget a glass of cool iced tea.
