Things to do in Savannah Iconic Savannah

Savannah's Historic Mercer House

Savannah Historic District

301 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Savannah, GA 31401

Step out the door and into one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the country. The streets here run on cobblestone and Spanish moss, past 18th-century homes, leafy squares, and monuments at nearly every turn. Join a walking tour to hear the stories behind the architecture, or set your own pace and let the squares lead you. Either way, the Historic District rewards anyone willing to slow down and look up.

Vintage downtown shopping

Ellis Square

Barnard Street, West St. Julian St., Savannah, GA 31401

Right behind the hotel sits Ellis Square, one of Savannah's original squares and the longtime home of the old City Market. It's a lively public space now, with a visitor center, an interactive fountain kids love on hot afternoons, plenty of seating, and a statue of Savannah's own Johnny Mercer. Catch live music and performances here, or just grab a bench and watch the city go by. For a square this central, it's a surprisingly easy place to slow down.

Centennial Olympic Park

City Market

219 W. Bryan Street, Savannah, GA 31401

Savannah knows how to throw a party, and City Market is a big reason why. Four blocks of open-air courtyards and converted warehouses hold restaurants, bars, shops, and working art studios, with live music spilling indoors and out most nights. Thanks to Savannah's to-go cup rule, you can carry your drink from one spot to the next. Stay out past dinner and you'll still find a kitchen or two serving. It all sits directly next door to us.

Explore all that River Street has to offer.

River Street

404 East Bay St, Savannah, GA 31401

Follow the cobblestones down to River Street and walk the edge of the Savannah River, where freighters and barges slide past close enough to wave at. Ducked into the old cotton warehouses you'll find candy shops, galleries, pubs, and seafood spots, plus open-air vendors selling local arts and crafts. It's a few minutes' walk from the hotel, and an easy way to spend an afternoon or a long evening by the water.

Take a ferry and experience the Historic Savannah city scape.

Savannah Waterfront

1 W River St, Savannah, GA 31401

The stretch of riverfront known as Savannah's Waterfront is where the city comes to celebrate. Locally owned boutiques, galleries, and restaurants line the water, and the calendar stays full year-round, from New Year's fireworks to the Fourth of July and the lights of Christmas on the River. Tall ships dock here, festivals fill the plazas, and the views of passing ships never get old. It's all a short walk north from West Bay Street.

Savannah's Historic District

Forsyth Park

Drayton St and E Park Ave, Savannah, GA 31401

A few blocks south of the squares, Forsyth Park anchors the Historic District across 30 green acres. The landmark white fountain dates to 1858 and draws a crowd, but there's room for everyone here, with shaded walking paths, tennis and basketball courts, open fields for soccer and frisbee, a children's play area, and a fragrant garden originally designed for the blind. Grab a coffee from the café and settle in. Locals treat it as the city's backyard.

Oak Trees covering the Downtown Area

Bonaventure Cemetery

330 Bonaventure Rd, Thunderbolt, GA 31404

About 15 minutes east of downtown, Bonaventure Cemetery spreads across a bluff above the Wilmington River. Live oaks draped in Spanish moss arch over the lanes, and elaborate sculpture marks the graves of poets, soldiers, and songwriters. The setting drew fame through local lore and the stories tied to those buried here. Come for the history, stay for the quiet beauty. The entrance sits at 330 Bonaventure Road.

crowd at the beach

Tybee Island

802 1st St, Tybee Island, GA 31328

When you're ready to trade cobblestone for sand, Tybee Island sits about 30 minutes east of downtown. Three miles of public beach stretch along the barrier island, from the quiet North Beach near the historic lighthouse to the lively South Beach with its pier. Paddle the back-river marshes, watch for dolphins, dig into fresh seafood, or just stake out a spot in the sand. It's Savannah's beach, and an easy day trip from the hotel.

Mercer-Williams House

429 Bull St, Savannah, GA 31401

On Monterey Square stands the Mercer-Williams House, the Italianate mansion designed by John Norris for General Hugh Mercer and finished in 1868. The house found fame as the setting of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." Ground-floor tours walk you through its rooms and its storied past.

Jepson Center

207 W York St, Savannah, GA 31401

Near our hotel, the Jepson Center brings a bold, modern counterpoint to Savannah's antebellum streets. Architect Moshe Safdie designed the glass-and-stone building, which opened in 2006 as part of Telfair Museums. Inside you'll find rotating exhibitions, a strong contemporary collection, and a hands-on children's art museum. It's a true reminder that Savannah's art scene didn't stop with the 19th century.

SCAD Museum of Art

601 Turner Blvd, Savannah, GA 31401

A short walk from the hotel, the SCAD Museum of Art sets cutting-edge contemporary work against the brick and soaring ceilings of a restored 19th-century railway depot. The building, once the Central of Georgia Railway headquarters, is a National Historic Landmark in its own right. Rotating exhibitions span painting, sculpture, photography, and film, with a renowned collection of African American art at its core.

First African Baptist Church

23 Montgomery St, Savannah, GA 31401

Just steps from the hotel, First African Baptist Church traces its roots to 1773 and the leadership of Reverend George Leile, making it one of the oldest Black congregations in the country. A National Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places, the church offers tours that share its remarkable history, including its role on the Underground Railroad. It's an essential stop for understanding Savannah.

St. John the Baptist

222 E. Harris St, Savannah, GA 31401

The twin spires rising over the Historic District belong to the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, the oldest Roman Catholic church in Georgia. Step inside for soaring vaulted ceilings, hand-painted murals, and stained glass that catches the afternoon light. It's an active parish and a working landmark, open to visitors who want a quiet moment or a closer look at one of Savannah's most striking interiors.
