Explore Our Neighborhood
Located between the campuses of Florida State University and Florida A & M University, Tallahassee's CollegeTown district is the epicenter of music, food, art, and fashion. The energy and creativity of the 52,000 students nearby give the neighborhood a youthful vibe. Formerly a heavy industrial zone, the walkable area has been transformed into a premier district packed with restaurants, brewpubs, shops, bars, and condos. FSU's Doak Campbell Stadium at the edge of the neighborhood, so CollegeTown is tailgate party central for Seminole fans during football season. In CollegeTown, there's always something unique and exciting to do, whether you're noshing on bánh mì sandwiches at a late-night hot spot or dancing to an edgy band in a funky G Street dive.
Take in history at this 24-acre park in the heart of Tallahassee's downtown with playgrounds, jogging paths, picnic tables, and shade trees. It's also home to the Smokey Hollow Commemoration exhibit, which honors an African American neighborhood that occupied the site of the park from the 1890s until the 1960s.
Stop and smell the more than 200 types of flowers at this stunning ornamental garden planted in the 1920s around the winter home of Alfred B. Maclay, an ice mogul whose family donated the gardens in the 1950s. The nature trails that wind through the woods overlooking Lake Hall are a highlight.
Get your history geek on at the state's official museum, where you can see the skeleton of a mastodon who lived nearby 12,000 years ago, gold and silver coins from 16th-century Spanish galleons shipwrecked in the Keys, and a 1920s RV camper that dates to the dawn of Florida tourism.
Ride the elevator up to the 22nd floor of this skyscraper that houses legislative offices and meeting rooms for a great view of Tallahassee. The building opened in 1977 behind the Historic Capitol, the traditional-looking domed building that's been restored to its 1902 splendor and houses the legislative chambers, rotunda, state Supreme Court and governor's office.
See a show at the grande dame of performance spaces in Tallahassee. The Ruby Diamond is the primary performance venue for FSU. It was built in 1911 as the university's main auditorium and regularly hosts acts ranging from The Beach Boys to the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra.
Drive just north of Tallahassee and 90 years back in time to this honest-to-gosh, one-room, cinderblock juke joint where hoochie coochie men have been belting the blues since the 1930s. The BBC hosts hot rock and blues acts like Johnnie Marshall, Grayson Capps, and The Randall Bramblett Band. It's got a rawbone vibe not to be missed.
Catch an edgy play at the city's only black-box style theater, The Studio, or see a more lavish production in the larger Mainstage theater. Both are housed at Theater Tallahassee, a nonprofit theater group in Midtown, the city's entertainment district, that's 15 minutes from the hotel.
Head over to the FSU campus and catch a concert or recital at the College of Music, where there are more than 500 events a year featuring faculty members, students, guest artists, and ensembles. Here's the best part: Nearly all of them are free.
The veggies and chickens that fill your dinner plate live just outside the door at this farm-to-table eatery run by brothers Jessie and Tyler Rice. Try the Honey Balsamic Brussels salad, which features almonds, feta, quinoa, corn, and red onion, along with a cup of Blue Crab Corn Bisque. Locals love the place for its Sunday brunch.
The vibe is laid-back and friendly at this popular lunch and dinner spot. Owner and chef Keith Baxter has been serving creative dishes in an eclectic atmosphere since the late 1990s. The menu changes, but look for favorites like Cuban Spiced Pork Chops, linguine, mojo chicken, and pecan-floured trout. Leave room for desserts by pastry chef Sylvia Gould.
This 34,000-square-foot brewery wonderland spans a city block. There's a private tasting room, a pet-friendly backyard beer garden, and an outdoor bar. Inside, two restaurants serve food like banh mi sandwiches and poutine and there are two dozen beers on tap, most of which are made on-site.
With Doak Campbell Stadium about a block away, Seminole fans come to this pub on the edge of campus for weekend brunch with Bloody Marys, mimosas, and items like The Bradley's Club, a sausage and egg sandwich on a Belgian waffle bun, or Spiced Honey Chicken & Waffles.
