Moody Gardens

The Strand Historic District

The center of Galveston’s original 19th century commercial district, the 36-block Strand Historic District offers one of the most extensive collections of restored Victorian-style buildings in the U.S. This jewel also features historic properties housing unique shops, cafés, galleries, museums, theaters and restaurants, and is one of the most popular areas for visitors.

Moody Mansion Museum

Completed in 1895, this stately brick and limestone mansion was home to W.L. Moody, Jr., who established one of the great American financial empires. He later formed the Moody Foundation, dedicated to medical and educational programs, as well as to restoring homes in Galveston. The mansion features original antique furnishings and stunning décor, plus a gift shop. Open daily for tours.

Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum

This state-of-the art facility is operated by the Offshore Energy Center (OEC) and gives you a closer look into Houston’s largest industry. Take a self-guided tour through the retired jack-up rig. Three decks feature exhibits on offshore drilling and production, marine transportation, environmental protection, construction and pipelining. Open seasonally.

Schlitterbahn Waterpark

Seawolf Park

The three-level pavilion overlooks the Port of Galveston and the Houston Ship Channel. Visitors can explore the World War II-era USS Stewart destroyer escort and USS Cavalla submarine. The park also offers a playground, picnic areas, an observation deck and excellent fishing. The tours and fishing admission are purchased separately by cash only, and are very reasonably priced.

Mardi Gras Museum

Galveston stages the biggest Mardi Gras celebration in Texas each year for two weeks in February, which began back in 1876. The entrance for this free museum is through Midsummer Books in the Strand Historic District in downtown Galveston. Exhibits include intricate costumes, memorabilia, photographs and models of the eight Galveston Mardi Gras arches designed in 1986 by world-renowned architects.
