Things to do in Portugal

Portugal is famed for its rich culture, historical landmarks and delicious seafood-leaning cuisine. Below, some of our favorite things to do.

Straight on beach view of pool and cabanas

Algarve

Blessed with turquoise waters, Algarve is a home to Iberostar Selection Lagos Algarve. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the beaches around Albufeira, Praia da Rocha, Lagos, Tavira and Portimão. Nearby, nature lovers will delight in Ria Formosa Nature Reserve whose ample activities include birdwatching, boating and kayaking. Algarve is also known for its numerous cycling routes along the coast.

Ponta da Piedade

When visiting Lagos, don’t miss a visit to Ponta da Piedade (Piety Point) where a magical cluster of golden cliff-like rock formations is perched above the Atlantic Ocean.

Lisbon

Lisbon is the capital city of Portugal. Don’t miss the famed duo of 16th-century landmarks – the Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery, built under King Manuel’s reign. Near Lisbon, the towns of Estoril and Cascais sit on a beautiful stretch of coast known as the Portuguese Riviera.

Sintra

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Sintra hosts the Arab-built, 19th century Castle of the Moors (Castelo dos Mouros) and the hilltop Pena Palace where Portuguese royalty once lived. Later, visit the Quinta da Regaleira estate and the stately Palace of Sintra (Palácio Nacional de Sintra).

Porto

Porto is home to the spectacular double-decker Dom Luís I Bridge, the São Bento railway station, the Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto) and the Church of São Francisco. Stroll the UNESCO-protected historical center and drop inside Lello & Irmão Bookstore (Harry Potter was inspired by its majestic interiors).  Meanwhile, Crystal Palace Gardens is ideal for a stroll coupled with lovely Douro River views. Don’t miss Porto’s beloved port wine bars.

Portuguese food

Thanks to its seafaring roots, fish and seafood headline most local menus. You’ll find hundreds of cod recipes including bacalao à brás (a baked golden cod dish). Or opt for sopa verde (green soup) made with cabbage, mashed potatoes, garlic and oil. Francesinha is a decadent Portuguese sandwich made with roasted meats and melted cheese. For hearty stews, Cozido à Portuguesa is made with meat and vegetables, while feijoada uses beans and salted pork. Don’t miss sampling local smoked sausages and black olives from Mirandela.

Dessert? Lisbon’s Belém (pastéis de Belém) are egg custard tarts dusted with cinnamon. Hailing from Aveiro, don’t miss Pão-de-lo de Ovar, a creamy traditional egg-based pudding. Home to 12 native cheeses, enjoy a sampling of creamy Serra da Estrella, or Azeitão, a local varietal made with thistle flower.

Popular drinks include fortified port wines and Ginjinha, a Portuguese liqueur made from ginja berries and served in a shot glass with a piece of fruit.

Bring your appetite for all-star dining. Iberostar Beachfront Resorts in Portugal hosts several restaurants with global cuisine and buffet options.
