Jiuzhaigou valley is a branch of the Baihe River, the upper reach of Baishuigou. Jiuzhaigou (literally "Nine Settlement Valley") takes its name from the nine Tibetan settlements along its length. Jiuzhaigou is situated at an elevation of more than 2,000 meters above sea level and is surrounded by large swaths of primitive forest. Well-known as a "realm of fairy tale," Jiuzhaigou is a National Scenic and Historic Interest Area and a World Heritage Site.

Renowned across the world for its colorful pools, snow-capped mountains, valleys and forests, the terrain of Huanglong consists of various golden travertine pools that travel down the course of the valley like a golden dragon wheeling through the forest, which inspired its name, literally meaning "yellow dragon".

The Goddess Lake scenic area, encompassed by lush forest, is interspersed with terraces consisting of approximately 2,000 colorful travertine pools and inhabited by rare animals like the giant panda and Tibetan antelope. The scenic area is famous for exhibiting the qualities of both Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou.

Songpan, formerly known as Songzhou, one of the famous historical cities of Sichuan Province, and a crucial border post in history, is dubbed the "gateway of western Sichuan". Songpan was once a bustling commercial hub that facilitated trading between tea from inland China and horses brought by Diqiang, Tubo and other peoples.

Flower Lake is a natural dam on the grassland, the best period to visit is around mid-July to Augest.
