Our Seasonal Take: Royal Picnic Afternoon Tea

Few traditions capture the spirit of British summertime quite like the picnic. Once enjoyed primarily by the aristocracy, picnicking became a symbol of genteel pleasure, particularly under the influence of Queen Elizabeth I’s lavish celebrations and Queen Elizabeth II’s fondness for garden parties and afternoon teas.

Our Royal Picnic Afternoon Tea pays homage to a timeless tradition, blending the joy of picnicking with the elegance of afternoon tea for a uniquely British experience inspired by royal customs and summer celebrations.

A Tale Of Two Elizabeths

From the ‘Royal Warrant’ Salmon & Caviar Bliss and Monarch’s Coronation Chicken Royale, inspired by Elizabeth II’s famous 1953 coronation dish, to the Elizabeth I Syllabub, a pastry royally adorned with a sable as a nod to the Virgin Queen’s love of these sweet confections, this symbolic spread celebrates the reigns of these two majestic monarchs.

Hand-selected by Tea Master, Lalith Lenadora, our new tea menu features over 20 infusions from across the globe, including three exclusively curated blends, such as the Elizabeth II, crafted with rooibos from South Africa, vanilla from Sri Lanka and delicate rose petals as an ode to the Commonwealth.

A Regal Experience

Dine like a true monarch with desserts such as our British apple and cinnamon syllabub, a favourite of the 16th-century Elizabeth, before relishing a rich chocolate biscuit cake inspired by our late queen’s aﬃnity for the treat.

No afternoon tea is complete without an assortment of savoury sandwiches to balance the sweet pastries, especially our regal Scottish bliss and Champagne and caviar éclair.

Each morsel is served on the ﬁnest Renaissance Gold teaware set by Wedgwood, a Royal Warrant holder, for an authentic regal experience.

Tea was more than a social occasion for the two queens, it was a cherished ritual. Elizabeth I, known for her patronage of The East India Company founded in 1600 during her reign, turned tea into an exclusive experience shared with her closest conﬁdants.
