Historic Downtown Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania Battlefields

Retrace some of the history of the Civil War at four battlefields: Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House. During the summer walking tours guided by park historians are available in certain locations. Two visitor centers at Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg help interpret the four battlefields with audio visual presentations and museum exhibits. Maps, brochures and assistance from park historians are available.

Quantico Marine Base

George Washingtons Ferry Farm

Located 38 miles south of Mount Vernon on the banks of the Rappahannock River opposite Fredericksburg, is Ferry Farm, George Washington's boyhood home. Visitors can take a self guided tour of the land Washington inherited at age 11 and where he lived between the ages of 6 and 20. Washington's Ferry Farm is an active archaeological site and the discovery of the location of the Washington house was just announced in 2008.

Kenmore Plantation and Gardens

Historic Kenmore Plantation and Gardens, one of the most elegant Colonial mansions in America, lies in the heart of historic Fredericksburg. It was built by George Washington's sister, Betty, and her husband, Fielding Lewis, a wealthy merchant. The mansion has recently undegone an extensive 8 year restoration to return it to its 1775 appearance. Visitors marvel at the amazing plasterwork ceilings and the historically accurate colors throughout the house.
