Mazu Belief originated in Putian,Fujian of Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) and,was introduced to Guangdong in early Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) and became one of the important folk beliefs in Guangdong.The special geographical position,unique human environment and developed maritime enterprise set up a social base and opened a door for Mazu Belief.Mazu Belief was successfully introduced to Guangdong for the reasons of the connections among regions,kinship relationships and people,etc.

The Southern Shaolin Temple was founded in 557 A.D., which had a reputation for being a revolutionary center and the Abbott refused to become a part of emperors army or take orders from him. In an effort to crush the growing rebellion, the Qing army attacked and burned the Southern Shaolin Monastery during middle of the 19th century. Only the most skilled Shaolin Monks escaped the attack. Now, the Southern Shaolin Temple is the centre of martial art in coastal region and famous scenic spots.
