Must See

Must See

If Highclere doesn't satisfy your craving for houses made famous in films and on TV, make the eight-mile trip to Basildon Park. This 18th-century country mansion set in picturesque parkland has a maze of nature trails for you to explore. Then you can pose for a photo on the house's magnificent sweeping staircase, which appears in several scenes in the 2005 film adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice".
Must Do

Must Do

Fancy a flutter on the horses? Take in a raceday and cheer on the thoroughbreds as they gallop down the home straight at Newbury Racecourse, less than 10 miles from the hotel. There are regular meetings here, or you can dress up for Ladies Day in August. If you need more, Ascot is 22 miles away. It also has events throughout the year, so you don't have to wait for Royal Ascot week in June.
Don't Go Home Without

Don't Go Home Without

Fans of the hit TV drama "Downton Abbey" can make a pilgrimage to Highclere Castle, 15 miles from the hotel. This magnificent Victorian country house was where much of the show was filmed. You can take a tour through the sumptuous interior rooms and learn more about the real family who live here, then stroll through the extensive ancient gardens, some of which were planted 800 years ago.

For a breath of fresh air and a little exercise, take a bracing stroll along the Kennet and Avon Canal, frequented by colourful barges, anglers and ducks. You can reach the leafy towpath within half a mile's walk of the hotel. If you fancy setting yourself a challenge, follow the path through picturesque villages and countryside as far as Newbury, nine miles to the west.
