Kumbum Monastery, also known as Ta'er Temple, is located in the urban area of Huangzhong District, Xining City, the capital of Qinghai Province. It was founded in the 12th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1379). Named after the Great Silver Pagoda built in memory of the founder of the Yellow Sect, Zongkhapa, in the Dajinwa Temple, it is called "Gunben Xianbalin" in Tibetan, meaning "Maitreya Temple with 100000 lion roaring Buddha statues". It is a national AAAAA level tourist attraction.
