Must See
Near the Clifton Suspension Bridge are The Downs, a large public park. At the centre, the Clifton Observatory, built into a one-time snuff mill, houses a camera obscura. Like a giant pinhole camera, this darkened room at the top of the building takes "pictures" of the surrounding countryside and projects them onto a wall, making for vivid panoramic views.
Must Do
The city of Bath, just over half an hour's drive from the hotel, has been a place of rest and recuperation since Roman times. In addition to the preserved Roman bath ruins, you can visit the contemporary Thermae Bath Spa and the Royal Crescent, a row of striking Georgian townhouses laid out in a semicircle. The American Museum in Britain near the University of Bath displays American folk art.
Don't Go Home Without
A 20-minute drive from the hotel, the Clifton Suspension Bridge is one of Bristol's best-known icons. A masterpiece of Victorian engineer and architect Isambard Kingdom Brunel, this 1864 bridge spans the Avon Gorge and the River Avon. That means a walk across the bridge, ending in leafy Leigh Woods, yields some impressive views - if you're not afraid of heights, that is.
Smart Tips
If you're a fan of street art, keep your eyes peeled for works by Bristolian guerrilla artist Banksy. The city's M Shed museum displays the "Grim Reaper", moved from its original location on the side of a boat. At the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, you can spot "Paint Pot Angel". A short drive from the hotel on Fishponds Road, look out for the bright pink mask on the "Masked Gorilla".
