Hotel Indigo York

The Gateway Neighbourhood

On one of the oldest streets in York, in the heart of our neighborhood of Walmgate, you will find Hotel Indigo® York. Surrounded by culture and steeped in rich history, our hotel shares its neighborhood with the iconic, historic sites of York, the many vintage shops and other hidden gems just waiting to be discovered.

Experience our fresh take on design in our 101 new, modern and high-quality boutique guest rooms. The design reflects the rich chocolate heritage of Rowntree and Terry’s of York and the city’s stonework. On our walls, look for references to this important history in chocolate production, as well as family names, printed on our bedside lamps, of the people who lived on this street, centuries ago.

Just a stone’s throw away from beautiful Walmgate Bar, one of the many gates that lead to the heart of the city, guests can explore the vibrant streets of York, taking in Northern Europe’s largest Gothic York Minster, 300 years of railway history at the National Railway. Let us inspire you with another taste of the neighborhood with one of our signature cocktails, or experience the flavors of our locally sourced menu, including our specialty Yorkshire meatballs.

Though the history of our neighborhood reaches far back, our amenities are modern. The Hotel Indigo York offers complimentary Wi-Fi, complementary fridge, 24-hour room service and fitness studio. We look forward to welcoming you!

    Neighborhoods

    Explore our neighborhood.

Hotel Indigo® York stands in the neighborhood near Walmgate Bar that is home to the city’s deep, centuries-old history. The making and selling of fine chocolate is an important part of the story, where Mary Tuke’s original grocery shop peddled its goodies back in 1725. Her efforts ultimately grew into a great confectionery dynasty, represented in names like Rowntree, Craven and Terry. (Did you know York is the birthplace of both the Chocolate Orange and the Kit Kat chocolate bar?) There’s tantalizing history to be tasted, here.

Our hotel mirrors the beauty of the landscape and the people who brought it to life. If the bricks in our walls could speak, they’d whisper tales of the railway line that connected the capitals of London and Edinburgh, and of the spiritual traditions that built our neighborhood’s York Minster. Symbols of the spiritual are found even in our York roses, pure white to represent innocence, joy, light itself: the Mystical Rose of Heaven.

Visitors to our neighborhood find Yorkshire hospitality very much alive today, alongside the history that makes us uniquely distinctive.

    City Walls

From Walmgate Bar you can walk toward the Minster through the city walls. It's the best part of the walking tour, taking you by the rear entrance of the Cathedral. Stop also at Monkgate Bar for the Richard III experience. (Tip: if you keep walking towards Micklegate Bar, you can enjoy the Henry VII experience and learn about the turbulent years of the Wars of the Roses.)

    City Walls
    Merchant Adventurer's Hall

This important medieval structure was built between 1357 and 1361. Take a look at its three main rooms: in its day, merchants conducted business in the Great Hall, while the Undercroft served as an alms house to care for the poor, and the Chapel offered spiritual care.

    Merchant Adventurer's Hall
    Quilt Museum

This museum is dedicated to British quilt making and the textile arts, the first historical museum of its kind in the country. Managed by the Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles, a charitable and educational organization, the museum’s aim is to promote the craft of patchwork, appliqué and quilting via exhibitions highlighting both historic and contemporary textiles.

    Quilt Museum
    Barley Hall

This historic house was hidden for hundreds of years; in fact, it looked like a modern office building as recently as the 1980s. When the building was slated for demolition, however, the medieval structure underneath was discovered in time to save it. The Hall has now been restored and decorated to look as it did in 1483, when it served as the Snawsell home.

    Barley Hall
    Barbican Centre

An indoor entertainment venue located just a few minutes from our hotel, the Centre hosts various music events throughout the year.

    Barbican Centre
    The Hop

A traditional, true ale house with an intimate atmosphere. Enjoy live music in a space where there’s a close connection between the artists and the listening public.

    The Hop
    Fossgate Social

The ideal venue to host intimate celebrations in cozy, candle-lit corners. They support local artists.

    Grand Opera House

Located in the city centre, the Opera House plays host to touring productions of plays, musicals, opera and ballet.

    Yorkshire Meatball Co.

Order the Balls Combo in our hotel’s own restaurant, along with a real Yorkshire Pudding!

    Yorkshire Meatball Co.
    Trembling Madness

Tip: walk into this shop and you will find one of the widest range of craft ales in the U.K. It is quite possible not to notice that upstairs lies one of Britain's most idiosyncratic beer bars, try the Steak and Ale Pie.

    Trembling Madness
    York Brewery

Sip local-brewed Yorkshire beers here. The Brewery features a 20-barrel brew plant with six traditional, open-top fermenters and five conditioning tanks. A gallery above the brewhouse offers a great view during guided tours.

Try the Raspberry Cheesecake at the Hairy Fig Deli and Café, a gem to visit and a great taste!
