Backstory

In the early 20th century, Indianapolis experienced rapid economic growth fueled by booming manufacturing, automotive, and food-processing industries. As downtown Indianapolis expanded around Monument Circle, new commercial developments transformed the city into a major business hub.

One of the era’s most notable projects was the Illinois Building, commissioned by L. Strauss Company president A.L. Block. Envisioned as a prestigious headquarters for his department store business, the building was designed by the renowned architectural firm Rubush & Hunter. Its grand design reflected the prosperity and ambition that defined downtown Indianapolis during the city's growth in the 1920s.

Construction

Designed by Rubush & Hunter, the Illinois Building opened in 1926 as a premier commercial property in downtown Indianapolis. The 10-story structure featured Italian marble, African mahogany woodwork, terrazzo mosaic floors, and large storefront windows designed to attract upscale retailers. A.L. Block invested more than $800,000 in construction—over $100 million in today’s dollars.

Located near Monument Circle and the Indiana State Capitol, the Illinois Building became a sought-after destination for offices and retail businesses. However, after changing ownership in the 1970s, the historic landmark fell into disrepair. By 2006, Indiana Landmarks had named it one of Indiana’s most endangered historic properties, underscoring the need for preservation and restoration.

Modern Day

The Illinois Building was revitalized through a $120 million restoration led by Keystone Group, transforming the historic landmark into the InterContinental Indianapolis. Opened in 2025, the luxury hotel features 170 guestrooms and suites, upscale dining venues, and Indiana’s first rooftop hotel bar.

The restoration carefully preserved the building’s historic character, including original architectural details, exterior medallions, and brass moldings. Today, InterContinental Indianapolis blends modern luxury with historic preservation, making it one of the premier hotels and landmark destinations in downtown Indianapolis.

In 2026, the historic Illinois Building will celebrate its 100th anniversary since opening in downtown Indianapolis. The landmark has also earned recognition as a member of the Historic Hotels of America, highlighting its architectural significance, rich history, and successful transformation into the InterContinental Indianapolis.
