Things to do

Fortaleza de São Miguel

Built by the Portuguese in 1576, and providing amazing views of the Bay of Luanda, Fortaleza de São Miguel is the city’s most important fort.  For decades, it served as a self-contained town protected by thick walls encrusted with cannons. One of its most beautiful features are the ornate wall tiles which tell the story of Angola’s history. The fort became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

Memorial de Agostinho Neto

Also known as the Foguetão, the Dr. António Agostinho Neto Memorial is a Luanda monument built in honour of the famous Angolan doctor, writer and politician. Following Angola’s independence from Portugal, he became the country’s first president. The iconic mausoleum and museum tower over the city and are Luanda’s most dominating structures. Also on display: photos of Agostinho Neto with other political leaders around the world, including Che Guevara, Fidel Castro and Honecker.

Museu da Moeda

The Museu da Moeda Luanda, or the Currency Museum of Luanda, is a unique institution in Angola that takes visitors on a journey through the history of money, from the Zimbo to the Kwanza. Managed by the National Bank of Angola, the museum houses extensive numismatic and notaphily collections, supplemented by various artifacts and audiovisual devices that shed light on Angola's past.

Palácio de Ferro

This is a historic building of Luanda, which according to historical sources, there are strong possibilities of being the author of Gustave Eiffel. This information was confirmed in 2015, when the French embassy in Angola classified the Iron Palace as a work by Gustave Eiffel. According to the aforementioned sources, the original set of the various pavilions that make up the Palace was designed by Gustave Eiffel for an international exhibition.

Miradouro da Lua

For a slice of the country’s stunning beauty, Miradouro da Lua — a set of cliffs south of Luanda, in the municipality of Belas, Angola — is a must see. Erosion caused by wind and rain created its lunar-like landscape.

Relax on Sangano Beach

Sangano Beach, a wide stretch of golden sand, is part of a larger national park. Snorkel the pristine waters, fish, or simply relax. Lush vegetation and bungalows offer a peaceful escape, and charming restaurants offer local delicacies. Try the grilled lobster on rice.

Shop for Local Crafts at Benfica Market

Just south of the city centre, Luanda’s Benfica Market is a wonderful place to shop for local handicrafts including jewellery, textiles, paintings, and baskets. Allow our concierge to arrange a guide to ensure the best bargains.

Surf at Cabo Ledo

The world-famous surfing beach, Cabo Ledo, lies a few hours south of Luanda. But it is worth the day trip. The beach has one of the world’s longest point breaks 500 metres and features a long slow left, making it the perfect destination for beginner surfers as well.
