Hotel Highlights

Listed in the National Register of Historic Places and housed within America's first Union Station, our hotel is popular for its authentic Pullman train car guest rooms resting on their original tracks. My wife and I arrived on Saturday afternoon, February 28th, for an overnight stay. We had valet park our car and entered the lobby to find 36 people waiting in line to check in. Yes, I counted them! There were only two receptionists checking people in. When we finally got to the desk after 23 minutes of waiting in line, I suggested they needed more receptionists to handle the crowd. One person behind the desk said that someone called and wasn't coming in that day.
I started the process and was told that I had already checked in and that my room was occupied. The clerk tried to tell me that my "other party" had already checked in. The "Other party" was my wife who rode with me from St. Louis and was sitting in the lobby with our luggage as I tried to check in. I asked to speak with the manager whose name was listed as " Manager on Duty." I was told that she wasn't at the hotel. I asked for any manager. The clerk used a radio to contact some assistant to see if my room was occupied. He acknowledged the call. I stepped aside to let other people check in as I was holding up the line.
The assistant came back and said that "Yes, there was someone checked into my room." I asked why he had not been helping out at the front desk, given the backup of people waiting to check in. He said that he had been manning the phones and working in the gift shop.
I asked how it could happen that someone was checked into my room in my name. He had no idea. I asked about getting a room and he said he would handle it. We ended up in room 246, the room nearest the elevator which had a cavitation hydraulic motor that hummed every time the elevator went up. Not a restful night.
We checked out Sunday morning and called for a bellman and our car to be brought up from valet parking. The bellman came promptly and handled our baggage courteously and professionally. We all descended to the lobby and he took our luggage outside under the canopy. We waited for our car...and waited...and waited... and waited. After 35 minutes, I approached the front desk and complained that many, many other people had had their cars delivered and we were still waiting. The manager #?# checked and our car was "the next one." We waited about 5 more minutes and it finally arrived. The manager #?# took off the valet parking charge and $25 more off our bill.
All things considered, this is not the service we expected or paid for from a Crowne Plaza hotel. It was terrible!
