Eight miles from the hotel, St. Alban’s Cathedral is a massive Norman church set on a hilltop. Pilgrims come to meditate and pray at the shrine of St. Alban, who, according to legend, was martyred by Romans on this site for professing his faith. You can climb the 11th-century bell tower, made largely from recycled Roman bricks, and admire the 13th-century paintings decorating the interior walls.

The town of Milton Keynes, 30 minutes’ drive from the hotel on the M1, is a shopper’s mecca. intu Milton Keynes and thecentre:mk sit right next to each other, with nearly 300 stores between them. You’ll find lots of familiar brands like Topshop and H&M. Xscape offers climbing walls, an indoor ski park and nightclubs along with shops geared towards active types.

Just five miles from the hotel, Whipsnade Zoo sprawls over 600 acres, making it the UK’s largest zoo. Steam trains chug around the property past elephants and through an open paddock with camels and yaks. The zoo is also home to lions, cheetahs and giraffes. There’s an indoor play area and cafés serving locally sourced meat and produce. You can save on admission by booking online in advance.

Luton has long been at the centre of England’s hat-making industry (which explains why the Luton Town Football Club are nicknamed the Hatters). You can pick up a Hat Trail brochure at the Town Hall that describes two Luton walking tours exploring historic warehouses and other sites. Both start at The Hat Factory, now an arts venue where you can see plays, comedy, live music and exhibitions.
