It was a nice ride while it lasted...

I've always enjoyed my stays at the Holiday Inn-Richmond. They have in the past and recently had excellent staff members (mostly) that are in it for the right reasons - to make the guest feel welcome and give the best service possible. How do I know this and what makes me an expert? Well, I've probably stayed at the Holiday Inn-Richmond, IN over 150 nights the past 4 years, traveling an average of 1 to 2 weeks per year for work.
Unfortunately, the owners/management have not given them the proper tools to give the customers the services deserved by travelers. I can go to any hotel in the Holiday Inn franchise and get ESPN in the in-room TV channel selection. Not at the Holiday Inn-Richmond, Indiana. High definition TV channels? Only some of the local networks and HBO. What about complimentary coffee served in the lobby? Not any more at the Holiday Inn-Richmond, Indiana. This past week I was welcomed in the morning by a totally impersonal sign that says if I want a coffee I need to go the restaurant and pay $1.50 for it. NOT!
These are some of the basic amenities that are important to me and I feel should be at any hotel worth their nightly rate. Therefore, I will be staying at a different hotel in Richmond that has the basic amenities that I expect.

The overall hotel was nice. My only complaints would be less puffy pillows, better bathroom lighting, and better restaurant food. We got 1 piece of bacon, some okay potatoes, and eggs for $9. I could have gone to Starbucks for the same price.

Did not meet expectations on many levels

I had three disappointments during my stay. First, I specifically chose the hotel approximately one year ago because I needed a suite to entertain guest while in town. I found out at check-in that there were no suites available. Secondly, there was trash (cups and paper) in the bottom of my closet, and thirdly, the breakfast my first morning at the hotel took more than 45 minutes to arrive after ordering.

Generally, the hotel seemed understaffed (IE someone's room service dishes sat in the hallway for almost 24 hrs) and the quality of workmanship in our bathroom was sub par by Holiday Inn standards.

Inconsistent service

I made reservations for three rooms nearly one year in advance for a graduation event. We chose this hotel because we were able to reserve a suite which would be used to host graduation guests. I completed an online confirmation two days in advance of our travel dates and the king suite was still available. However, upon check-in, I was informed that the King Suite was no longer available and that only a typical room was available as a replacement. Thankfully we had not purchased, in advance, all the food we planned to prepare and serve in the suite. No apology or advance phone call was offered.

The room was clean, but the closet had trash in it when we arrived.

The breakfast was fine, but the first morning of our stay the breakfast took over 45 minutes to be served after ordering.

We have reserved rooms for guests at the Vanderbilt Holiday Inn in Nashville, and this hotel doesn't come close to meeting those standards.
