You may not realise, but an Egyptian queen lives just 15 minutes’ walk away from the hotel. Over 3000 years old, the iconic, bust of Nefertiti anchors the collection at the Neues Museum. Visit to admire her beauty, alongside stunning Greek, Roman and Egyptian antiquities. The museum itself, lovingly reconstructed by David Chipperfield architects after decades of post-WWII ruin, is a big draw too.
You can experience Berlin at its hippest with a walk around the Hackescher Markt area, a short stroll from the hotel. Trendy boutiques, cult coffee bars and gourmet restaurants are set among gorgeous pre-war buildings in the nearby Mitte district. Check out independent film screenings at Babylon Kino, and save a dance at the end of the evening for Clärchens Ballhaus, a century-old dance hall.
Don't Go Home Without
The Spree is a lovely river, but the Landwehrkanal, a leafy canal running through Kreuzberg to the south, is even more picturesque. Ride the U-Bahn U8 line eight minutes from nearby Alexanderplatz to Schönleinstrasse, where a Turkish market livens up the canal's banks on Tuesdays and Fridays. Get some snacks, then find a picnic spot overlooking the boats, swans and Berliners playing boule.
Those friendly yellow U-Bahn trains may look free, but they're not. Berlin's metro depends on the honours system, so although there are no turnstiles, you still have to buy a ticket. Buy packs of four ("4-Fahrten-Karte") to save money, then make sure to insert each ticket into the boxy stamp machines on the platform before boarding. Anything else could net you a fine, and a bit of a story to tell.
