For a family day out, head to Colchester Zoo, 15 minutes' drive from the hotel. Set in 60 acres of parkland, the zoo has more than 270 species of animals, from leopards to penguins and from orangutans to sea lions. Kids can feed elephants and giraffes, and play at being wild animals in the Jungle Tumble soft play complex or the adventure play areas. There are plenty of cafés and restaurants too.
Escape to the country at the Beth Chatto Gardens, only 17 minutes from the hotel by car. You can follow pebbled pathways through woodland filled with soaring trees and gossamer ferns, and admire lily pads and violet irises around the ponds in the water gardens. A tea room serves breakfast, lunch and snacks, and adults can take gardening courses while kids learn all about the local creepy crawlies.
Don't Go Home Without
Book a guided tour of Colchester Castle, 15 minutes' drive from the hotel, to visit the roof and subterranean Roman vaults. Kids can dress up in helmets and shields or imagine life as a prisoner in the jail, while adults admire the 2,000-year-old Roman coins, vases and artefacts in the on-site museum. Regular family events include crafts workshops and the chance to meet historical characters.
The Mercury Theatre, six miles from the hotel in Colchester town centre, presents family-friendly shows ranging from rousing musicals to home-grown drama produced by the resident company. You can book tickets for touring comedians or concerts by jazz and pop tribute bands, and have lunch before a matinee or a pre-show dinner at the restaurant. The on-site Digby Gallery shows work by local artists.
