Since Congress established it in 1910, Glacier National Park has evolved from its early status as a "public pleasuring ground" and rustic tourist destination to a protected, yet accessible, repository of nationally significant cultural and natural resources. Blackfeet, Salish, Pend d'Oreille, Kootenai and other native peoples inhabited the area for at least 10,000 years prior to the park's creation. Much of the park's natural landscape remains as it once was.

Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western part of the contiguous United States. With a surface area of about 191.5 sq mi (496 km) it is slightly larger than that of Lake Tahoe. Flathead Lake is 27.3 mi (43.9 km) long and up to 15.5 mi (24.9 km) wide. The Northwest Montana History Museum, at the restored Central School building in Kalispell, Montana, United States, is a history museum featuring exhibits that illuminate the history of the Northwest Montana region and Flathead Valley.
