The legal history of this land goes back to before this was Prowers County when 1865 as part of a treaty between the United States government and the Cheyenne and Arapahoe tribes, this became part of a 640 acre parcel of land known as Indian Claim No. 26.
Big Timbers Museum is named for a stand of huge cottonwood trees that grew along the Arkansas River. The cottonwoods stood along a buffalo migratory route and were a welcome site to Native Americans, pioneers, army units, and traders.
Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site features a reconstructed 1840's adobe fur trading post on the mountain branch of the Santa Fe Trail where traders, trappers, travelers, and Plains Indian tribes came together in peaceful terms for trade. Today, living historians recreate the sights, sounds, and smells of the past with guided tours, demonstrations, and special events.
Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site

The Sand Creek Massacre took place on November 29, 1864. That morning 650 Colorado volunteers attacked a village of Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians. Dawn was broke by the clanging of muskets, artillery, and the booming voice of John Chivington- the Fighting Parson's final harangue to his troops. Within moments, a tragic and chaotic scene began to unfold.

Spreading Antlers Golf Course opened in 1965 and was designed by Labron Harris. It is a public golf course, 18 hole regulation. They also Have carts, a driving range, sanck bar and lounge.
