North-South Skirmish Association (N-SSA) was formed in 1950 to commemorate the heroism of the men who fought in the Civil War, 1861-65. The NSSA promotes the shooting of Civil War firearms & artillery and encourages the preservation & display of Civil War materials. The N-SSA conducts skirmishes, competitive, live firing of these Civil War firearms and artillery. Ft. Shenandoah is the NSSA's home range. Postitioned in the rolling hills of the lower Shenandoah Valley, minutes from Winchester.

Romney Eagle Scenic Train

In 1991 the Eagle Canon Passenger Car Company began operating the Potomac Eagle from a siding named Wappocomo Station just north of Romney. The trek to Sycamore Bridge to the south of Romney & back to Wappocomo Station covers 17 miles and three and a half hours by Potomac Eagle. As soon as the train pulls out of the station & the wheels start squeaking & grinding their way south visitors become enthralled with the beauty of the South Branch River.

Belle Grove Plantation

Belle Grove begins with the German immigration into the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. In 1732, Jost Hite, his partner Robert McKay, & 16 families came to the northern Valley to settle on 140,000 acres obtained in two land grants. A grandson of Jost Hite & his bride Nelly Conway Madison, sister of a future President Madison the 483 acres on which Belle Grove house was later built. In 1794, construction began, & was completed in 1797. The home was built with limestone quarried on the property.
