Discover Athens Like a Local

From beloved coffee shops and brunch favorites to standout restaurants and rooftop bars, discover the local spots that give Athens its flavor, all within easy reach of the hotel.

Coffee Shops Nearby

WEST HANCOCK AVE Foxtail Coffee

A few blocks west of downtown, Foxtail roasts responsibly sourced beans in a space built for lingering, with communal tables, a 10-flavor gelato program, and affogato pairings that blur the line between coffee and dessert. Beer and wine mean it's just as good at 4 p.m. as it is at 8 a.m.

EAST BROAD ST, DOWNTOWN Jittery Joe's Downtown

An Athens institution since 1994, Jittery Joe's roasts its own beans and pioneered 24/7 service next to the 40 Watt Club. The downtown shop hums with college-town energy, and the honeysuckle latte is the thing to order if you want to taste something you can't get anywhere else.

COLLEGE AVE, DOWNTOWN Sunroof Coffee

Founded by two UGA grads in 2023, Sunroof started as a walk-up window in the Mill District and now pours downtown on College Ave. The drinks get playful, like the Coco Moco, a Condor Chocolate mocha topped with coconut foam, and the Matcha Paloma. Pastries come from Independent Baking Co.

Breakfast + Brunch

OAK ST Mama's Boy

A retro diner that's been voted best breakfast in Athens more times than anyone's counted. The buttermilk biscuits and cinnamon rolls are enormous, the Georgia Peach French Toast earns its name, and "Chocolate Cake for Breakfast" is somehow on the menu and somehow justified. Expect a wait on weekends, and know it's worth it.

PRINCE AVE Flying Biscuit Café

Breakfast all day, served with Southern warmth on the Prince Ave corridor. The namesake flying biscuit comes with cranberry apple butter, and the Shrimp & Grits and Love Cakes have a loyal following. The patio is a bonus on a slow Athens morning. The relaxed setting makes it an easy stop for breakfast, brunch, or lunch near downtown Athens.

N HULL ST, DOWNTOWN 5 Bar — Sunday Brunch

Five dinners, five wines, five cocktails, everything made from scratch. On weekends, 5 Bar turns into a jazz brunch from 10 to 3, with live music, a patio, and a DIY Bloody Mary bar that's worth the trip on its own. Fresh seafood comes straight from their own Destin wholesale market. It is an easy stop while exploring downtown Athens.

Favorite Lunch Spots

PRINCE AVE, NORMALTOWN Marti's at Midday

Set inside a 100-year-old house in Normaltown, Marti's serves the kind of lunch that makes you want to move here. The chicken salad and pimento cheese are quietly famous, scooped with house-made pita chips, and the sunroom and patio are as charming as the food.

N HULL ST, DOWNTOWN Trappeze Pub

A craft beer landmark on Hot Corner with 33 rotating draughts and a deep vintage bottle cellar. No televisions, by design, so conversation carries the room. The Belgian fries have been voted best in Athens repeatedly, and the steak frites and veggie Reuben hold their own alongside the beer list.

E CLAYTON ST, DOWNTOWN Pauley's Crepe Bar

Sweet and savory crepes in the heart of downtown since 2008. The Buffalo Chicken and Bananas Foster crepes show the range, and there's a full bar with an Around the World Beer Club challenge for the ambitious. Lively, central, and a solid sit-down escape from the Clayton St. bustle.

Favorite Bars

N LUMPKIN ST, DOWNTOWN Georgia Theatre Rooftop

Above the historic Georgia Theatre, with views south toward campus and east across downtown. Burgers and chili cheese fries come from the Branded Butcher kitchen below, mojitos are the house pour, and free weekend live music plus UGA football on the screen make it a game-day ritual.

E CLAYTON ST, DOWNTOWN Allgood Lounge

Two bars, two floors, and a tiki bar opening onto a rooftop patio, all in the heart of downtown. The Build-Your-Own Bloody Mary bar is a daytime institution, and the pool table upstairs and big-screen TVs keep things relaxed on weeknights before the weekend crowd rolls in.

E BROAD ST, DOWNTOWN Blue Sky Bar

A tucked-away speakeasy across from UGA's North Campus, with over 200 craft and import beers, 50-plus scotches, and a 70s-vibe room of booths and a partially covered rooftop. Named for Georgia All-American Craig "Sky" Hertwig, it's one of the best game-day people-watching perches in town.

Favorite Dinners

W CLAYTON ST, DOWNTOWN Last Resort Grill

An Athens fixture since 1992, set in the building that once housed the legendary Last Resort music club. Southwestern-inspired Southern cooking, with fried green tomatoes over Vidalia bacon dressing, praline chicken, and shrimp and grits. Local art on the walls keeps the music-club spirit alive.

W BROAD ST Chuck's Fish

Gulf-to-table seafood inside the restored Historic Greyhound Bus Depot, with fish sourced daily from Destin, Florida. The fried oyster platter and the Gulf fish "parmandine," stuffed with crab and toasted almonds, are the order. Upscale without the stuffiness, and the retro tile and patio seal it.

W HANCOCK AVE, DOWNTOWN The National

Mediterranean and Spanish flavors from chef Peter Dale, with a menu that shifts every few weeks to follow what's growing in Northeast Georgia. The hummus platter, Medjool dates, and grilled beef hanger steak are signatures, and the covered patio and bar make it a true neighborhood gathering spot.

Restaurants with Kids

W WASHINGTON ST, DOWNTOWN Clocked

A retro diner with never-frozen beef burgers that dare you to try the Peanut Butter Bacon Burger. Milkshakes are tall, onion rings are house-battered, and there's a black bean burger for the veggie crowd. The kids' menu is generous with full-size portions, and picnic tables out front make it a family favorite.

W WASHINGTON ST, DOWNTOWN Ted's Most Best

Artisan pizza fired in a stone oven, served in a renovated tire garage with a spacious patio and bocce ball court. Build-your-own pies, the Margherita, and gluten-free crusts keep everyone happy, while paninis and a kids' menu round things out. Beer, wine, and a daily happy hour make it feel like a getaway.

S LUMPKIN ST Cali N Tito's

A colorful, pan-Latin carnival of Cuban, Peruvian, and Central American flavors served fast-casual. Fish tacos are the move, the outdoor patio is expansive and kid-friendly, and kids eat free on Wednesdays. It's BYOB and cash or check only, part of its offbeat charm.

W WASHINGTON ST, DOWNTOWN Rook & Pawn

A board game cafe with over 800 tabletop and card games to play while you eat. The menu runs to pub-fancy sandwiches, comfort food, coffee, and local beer on draught, and staff will help you pick a game if you're new. Cozy and family-friendly, it's where lunch turns into an all-afternoon Catan marathon.
