The University of Georgia is located 5 blocks from the Hotel Indigo in downtown Athens, Ga. It was the first federally chartered university in the United States. UGA is home to the Georgia Bulldogs football team, the highly lauded Gym Dawgs gymnastics team, the prestigious Peabody Award for American Journalism, the internationally renowned Complex Carbohydrate Research Center, and dozens of acclaimed professors.

The Georgia Museum of Art is both a university museum and, since 1982, the official state museum of art. Located on the East Campus of UGA, in the Performing and Visual Arts Complex, it opened in 1948. Recently, it completed an extensive expansion and remodeling of its building that has allowed it to display its permanent collection continually. The garden is a 313-acre preserve set aside by UGA in 1968 for the study and enjoyment of plants and nature. It is a living laboratory serving educational, research, recreational and public service roles for the university and the citizens of Georgia. It contains a number of specialized theme gardens and collections, more than five miles of nature trails, and four major facilities including a tropical conservatory.
