Visitors can still see the deeply entrenched ruts left by wagons headed west. To travel the Oregon Trail, begin your trip at either South Pass State Historic Park or Fort Bridger State Historic Park. Along the route, you will fin roadside turnouts with interpretive signs that describe various events along the Oregon Trail.

Traveling west, you will pass the city of Green River and notice a number of surface processing plants known as the "Trona Patch". Sweetwater County contains the most massive and easily mineable deposits of trona known in the world. Trona, the raw material for soda ash, is used to make glass, paper, baking soda, deodorant, detergent and other common products.

Seedskadee NWR was established in 1965 as mitigation for the loss of habitat when Flaming Gorge and Fontenelle dams were constructed. The riparian corridor is an important migration route and nesting area for a wide variety of migratory waterfowl and passerine bird species.

Jackson Hole, gateway to Yellowstone National Park, is only a 3 hour drive from Rock Springs. Head North on 191 North and enjoy seeing large herds of antelope, wild horses and unspoiled vistas. Stop in the western town of Pinedale to view the beautiful Wind River Mountains 100 miles from Rock Springs then head on over the scenic Rim pass to Jackson Hole, Wyoming!

The Reliance Tipple is the site of two coal tipples for coal production at Reliance, Wyoming. The first tipple was built in 1910 and used until 1936. The perishable portions of the earlier tipple have disappeared, leaving only the sandstone foundations and some artifacts buried in the tailings pile. The second tipple was built more durably of concrete and steel. This tipple operated until 1955, when the Union Pacific Railroad, the chief consumer of the mine's coal, phased out steam locomotives

Dinosaurs, placed throughout the building, are among the prehistoric animal and plant specimens on display at the Western Wyoming Community College Natural History Museum. Species range in age from 67 million to 180 million years old. Don't miss the fossilized fish and the baby alligator. The museum also has rotating exhibits.

This self-guided tour begins at 201 B Street, at the Rock Springs Historic Museum. Walkers can either visit the museum at the beginning of the tour or come back after taking the tour. There are nearly 50 stops along the self-guided tour. Perhaps the most popular stop along the tour is the building on North Front where Butch Cassidy allegedly worked as a meat cutter, receiving the name “Butch.”

Visitors to the museum walk through the history of coal mining, exploring how coal brought booms and busts to Rock Springs. Rock Springs is named for a stop along the Overland Stage Line, where travelers found cold spring water. Rock Springs was never planned as a permanent city but many coal miners called it home and it stuck. Rock Springs became a melting pot of nationalities as immigrants came to work in the coal mines. The city is known as the "Home of 56 Nationalities."
