Failed early morning call

After an exhausting day in Manchester my son and I arrived after midnight to break up our journey to Swindon. My phone alarm is unreliable and I asked for an early call to ensure we were up and off for an important audition later in the morning. My wife called the hotel 2 hours after the requested time to see if we had overslept. We had. The receptionist informed me that it had been a busy morning and apologised for not calling.Needless to say we were late for the audition. Why doesn't a modern hotel ( presumably the chain ?? ) have an automated call system rather than rely on one staff member to pass on requests to another staff member ?
