Hotel Indigo Kansas City – The Crossroads
Hotel Indigo Kansas City – The Crossroads
Hotel Indigo Kansas City - The Crossroads takes its inspiration from the city's thriving creative scene by incorporating local artwork throughout its three-story building. The 81 guest rooms of this historically certified, former home of the KC Costume Company, are embellished by custom fabric headboards and specially commissioned art — including a framed paint brush. The latter is a nod to Jim Leedy who in 1985 opened the first gallery in the Crossroads in what was once a paint brush factory. He is among the local creative types who have helped shape the unique experience of staying at the Hotel Indigo Kansas City Crossroads.

Crossroads Arts District dates to the early 20th century when Hollywood chose Kansas City as a central distribution point for films and related products. Back in the day, many of these buildings housed facilities for MGM, 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros., among others. Today, some of Hollywood's classic films are still tucked away safely in the limestone caves found just a few blocks away. The Crossroads now boasts more than 20 square blocks of restaurants, galleries, studios and creative spaces, all accessed by convenient stops on Kansas City's streetcar line. Anchored by the magnificent Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts and the pie-shaped Western Auto building, the Crossroads represent the depth and breadth of creative expression of Kansas City.
More than where Amtrak's Southwest Chief arrives each day, Union Station is an architectural icon with one of the most beautiful ceilings this side of the Sistine Chapel. It's also where Kansas City rings in the new year with a big, annual celebration, learns about science at the Science City museum and serves up a classic Kansas City strip steak at Pierpont's.
The 10,000 or people who regularly show up for First Friday in the Crossroads Arts District make this one of the largest such gallery events in the country. No matter the season, Kansas City shows up in force for gallery and studio tours, street music, food trucks and to absorb the mojo of the Crossroads.
As the home of Hallmark Cards, Crown Center oozes creativity and family fun. From the kaleidoscope of colors at the Crayola Store to an actual creative center for kids called Kaleidoscope, everyone leaves coloring outside the box. The facility also includes LegoLand, popular with kids and adults; The Coterie Theatre for children's productions; the National World War I Museum; and the Liberty Memorial, offering a commanding view of the city from the top.
The Moshe Safdie-designed Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts transformed the Kansas City skyline when it opened in 2011. The venue's two stages features performances by the Kansas City Symphony, Kansas City Ballet and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, as well as touring music acts and guest lecturers.
Crossroads KC started out with just really good pizza at a place called Grinders, but soon the passion overflowed into an empty back lot that is now one of the best outdoor music venues in the city. Here, you will find some great indie bands playing reggae, the blues, jazz, zydeco and everything in between.
The Brick is a classic burger joint that becomes a dive bar at night, where you can experience punk, jazz and a wide mix of other entertainment. Some nights you'll hear poetry, story telling or other spoken word presentations, and then some nights the roof rocks off the joint. Stay late for “brick-fast," considered by some the best biscuits and gravy in town.
The iconic Green Lady Lounge is the spot to settle in and listen to serious jazz, Kansas City-style. Two stages and no cover charge guarantee you'll hear the city's finest musicians seven nights a week, all year long.
Back in the day, this triangle-shaped building sold cars, but since the early '80s, the spot has been the site of a popular, family-owned restaurant selling burritos, tacos and other classic Mexican fare. Manny's signature salsa is renowned, and you can purchase a jar to take home.
When acclaimed chef and TV host Lidia Bastianich looked to expand beyond the Big Apple, she found this architectural gem that was once a freight house behind Union Station. The Northern Italian restaurant is known for its daily three-course pasta special and house-made gelato.
La Bodega lets you celebrate Kansas City's sister city relationship with Seville, Spain, with the most authentic tapas in town. The colorful, industrial-inspired bar-restaurant serves a range of small plates, as well as the classic paella Valenciana, and is a popular spot for its daily happy hour.
At Blvd. Tavern, the patio tables are in high demand, especially on First Friday and summer weekends. On the menu, you will find a mix of bar snacks like fried cheese curds, pasta dishes and a must-try Korean fried chicken.
