Hotel Indigo Kansas City Downtown
Hotel Indigo Kansas City Downtown
Housed in the beautifully renovated 1930s-era Brookfield Building which held ticket offices for various train stations, the Hotel Indigo Kansas City Downtown offers a reminder of the rail lines that put this city on the map. As a nod to this 12-story tower's past, our 118 guest rooms are styled with travel-themed touches — including postcard and postmark designs in rooms — and the lobby features a train mural. You can start the day with a cup of locally-brewed Parisi coffee before heading out to must-see spots like Union Station, the Arvest Bank Theater, legendary jazz clubs and world-class restaurants just steps from the hotel.

Neighborhoods
Built on the railroad boom, Kansas City has long been a crossroads for adventure-seekers with downtown the center of it all. The story of this evolving area can be told through the architecture, where a historic Art Deco theater is the centerpiece of one block or a futuristic arena anchors another. Or in the history of speakeasies that once attracted the likes of Al Capone — the craft cocktail scene is currently having a revival of Prohibition-era proportions. Count Basie and Charlie Parker may have put jazz scene on the map, but emerging artists continue to develop the city's signature sound. Of course, no trip to Kansas City would be complete without a heaping plate of barbecue and, like the city itself, you'll find there is a style for all tastes.
The century-old station is not just an Amtrak hub, but a cultural center as well — and the neighborhood's most iconic building. As train travel traffic slowed, the grand marble-lined halls found new purpose and now houses a planetarium, a world-class science center, rail exhibit and upscale restaurants worth a cross-country rail trip alone.
Owner Keith Wardlaw opened this sleek interior design and home furnishings shop to bring contemporary items he craved to Kansas City. The well-curated showroom carries statement-making furniture, bedding and accents from Jonathan Adler, Loll Designs, Ferm Living and urbn.furniture.
In the 1930s, major movie studios set up distribution centers in this warehouse district, which became known as Film Row. Today, it's a thriving enclave of galleries, boutiques and restaurants. Don't miss the buzzworthy open gallery night hosted the first Friday of every month.
After a complete renovation, this Renaissance-style landmark theater reopened in 2008 to host live performances. Acts as diverse as the city itself, including international ballet troupes, headlining comedians and rock bands, regularly take to the stage of this state-of-the-art theater. Pop by the Indie on Main lounge adjacent to the theater for a drink before a show.
With its red-velvet clad walls hung with gilded-framed paintings, this atmospheric jazz club offers live, no-cover performances on every night of the week, on two stages, on weekends. The Green Lady stays open until 3 a.m. every night, making it the perfect spot for a night cap.
In the spirit of the speakeasy-style saloon that thrived on this downtown corner in the late 1800s, the Phoenix is a local favorite for live music and bar food. Live bands take the stage nearly every night, and there's a jazz brunch every weekend.
Opened in the 1920s, this is the original spot for Kansas City-style smoked meats smothered in the founding chef's signature sauce and served on white bread. There's nothing quite like tucking into a slab of pork ribs or a hearty combo sandwich in the no-frills dining room of this iconic restaurant.
Craft brewing is an elevated art form at this brewery, beer garden and restaurant with a name that's a nod to the long-shuttered Imperial Brewery. Pair a silky Milk Stout or citrusy Wheat Ale with gastro pub fare like the rabbit molé and a tri-tip steak sandwich.
Opened in 1857, this daily farmers market is one of the largest in the Midwest. You can grab lunch at one of the restaurants or stalls, and check out workshops, cooking demos, live music and a kaleidoscope of fresh produce on offer.
