Hotel Indigo Traverse City

Hotel Indigo Traverse City

The great outdoors with an urban edge.

Standing among revamped lumberyards, sawmills and canneries, Hotel Indigo® Traverse City reflects the new life and vibrant spirit of our waterfront Warehouse District neighborhood. We also pay homage to its past —  the kind of logging history that could sprout tall tales like Paul Bunyan's — with modern guest rooms featuring wood details a 19th-century white-pine lumber baron would love. Start your day here with locally brewed coffee before heading out to taste Michigan's famous tart cherries — each July, the National Cherry Festival unfolds in front of the hotel in this city which, today, produces about 75 percent of the tart cherries grown in the United States. The freshwater beaches of the bay nearby are ready for you to explore as well. Unwind at our sawmill-inspired rooftop bar for views of West Grand Traverse Bay paired with local craft brews and wine. Discover our favorite Traverse City labels and why life is sweet here at the grape-friendly 45th Parallel, the latitude we share with the renowned wine regions of France and Italy.

      Neighborhoods

      Explore our neighborhood.

Dazzling bay views dominate our waterfront Warehouse District, where West Grand Traverse Bay is the backdrop for a thriving culture rooted in the history of the lumber boom. Historic buildings, many of which are renovated storerooms and sawmills, now house modern shops, restaurants and craft breweries, while others like the “Grand Old Lady” City Opera House maintain their 19th-century façade. An eclectic day in the Warehouse District may include a stop at Salon Saloon, where you can enjoy a cocktail and a haircut; a meal at one of the stellar eateries lining Front Street; and a walk or bike ride along our many trails. Our streets may have changed since the days Michigan’s lumberjack “shanty boys” played here, but they’re no less vibrant today.

      Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Visit Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore for the most breathtaking views and best outdoor recreation in Traverse City — and to see “the most beautiful place in America,” according to Good Morning America’s 2011 vote. Feel the sand between your toes as you stroll down the shoreline, canoe through glistening water and observe local wildlife while enjoying a picnic.

      Autumn Leaves

Each fall, the leaves in Traverse City burst into vibrant shades of red, orange, gold and yellow, drawing visitors “up north” for leaf peeping. Stroll through the city and take in the beauty of the changing seasons.

      Traverse City Film Festival

Since its inaugural event in 2005, the Traverse City Film Festival has grown in popularity and attendance every year. As a charitable, non-profit function, it was key in renovating the historic downtown State Theatre, which now operates year-round. See independent films from up-and-comers, attend daily panels and classes, and enjoy free outdoor screenings of classic movies.

Learn about the history of automated music in a gorgeous orchard setting and explore a unique collection of rare instruments dating from the 18th century to the 1950s. The museum hosts a variety of regular performances, including silent films with live musical accompaniment and the annual Concert on the Green.

      City Opera House

Known as the “Grand Old Lady,” the City Opera House has hosted concerts, galas, balls, operettas and more for over 100 years. Though it closed in 1920, this Victorian-style venue has since been restored and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Now it partners with Michigan State University’s Wharton Center to produce everything from musicals to dance performances to comedy.

      Tart Cherries

After planting a cherry orchard on Old Mission Peninsula in 1852, Pete Dougherty discovered that Traverse City’s sandy soil and proximity to Lake Michigan made the area ideal for growing this delicious fruit. Over 150 years later, the city is widely known as the Cherry Capital of the World, producing about 75% of the country’s tart cherries. Taste their world-renowned flavor in everything from pies to jellies to wine.

      Wineries

Like Spain and France, Traverse City is located on the 45th Parallel, making it the perfect place to grow grapes and other fruit. In turn, the city boasts over 40 wineries with a vast selection of reds and whites. Take a trip down the vineyard and orchard trails, sample hundreds of wines made with local ingredients, and attend popular events like the Traverse City Wine and Art Festival.
