Dresden is a delightful mix of old-world historical landmarks, funky young neighbourhoods and lush green spaces. With so much to see and do in Dresden, narrowing down your itinerary can be difficult. By focusing on the Dresden neighbourhoods, you can move around easily without missing any of the city's world-class destinations. Here are some of the top Dresden neighbourhoods to focus on during your next visit.

Enjoy the Funky Aubere Neustadt

Home to many students, young professionals and artists, Aubere Neustadt is the modern, trendy part of Dresden. There is always something to do in Aubere Neustadt with over 100 bars, pubs, clubs, small art galleries and live music spots. Be sure to check out the Kunsthofpassage, a series of five residential courtyards that have funky artistic facades.

Kunsthofpassage: Görlitzer Str. 21-25, 01099 Dresden, Germany

Check Out the Shops at Innere Neustadt

Sandwiched between the Elbe River on one side and Aubere Neustadt, the Innere Neustadt is a residential area filled with beautiful baroque-style townhouses. The Innere Neustadt has been extensively restored since the bombings of World War II. Spend some time wandering the Hauptrstrasse. This pedestrian gallery is lined with places to eat, wine bars, specialty shops and theaters. If you happen to be in Dresden at Christmastime, be sure to visit the Augustusmarkt, Dresden's second-largest Christmas market.

Explore the History of the Altstadt District

Known as Dresden's "Old Town," the cobblestone streets of the Altstadt District are filled with many historically significant attractions. After being nearly destroyed by Allied bombings at the end of World War II, the Altstadt has been extensively reconstructed and redeveloped. In addition to the many historical buildings, you can enjoy international restaurants, designer shops and fun cafes. The major tourist attractions in the Altstadt are only minutes away from the Hotel Indigo Dresden - Wettiner Platz. Situated between the Altstadt and the Kraftwerk Mitte cultural complex, Hotel Indigo is a short walk away from the Zwinger, Frauenkirche and Semperoper.

Ride the Railway at Loschwitz

Nestled into the slopes of the Elbe River, Loschwitz is best known for its beautiful villas and its suspension railway. The Schwebebahn Dresden opened in 1901, making it one of Europe's oldest suspension railways. The suspension railway connects Loschwitz to the district of Oberloschwitz. Three palaces overlook the Elbe River in Loschwitz. You can tour the Lingnerschloss and Albrechtsberg castles, both built by Prince Albert of Prussia. Eckberg Palace is now a hotel and restaurant.

Experience the Romance of Hellerau

Known as "Dresden's Garden City," this romantic, old-world district features lots of lush green spaces. Be sure to check out the Festspielhaus Hellerau (Old Festival Hall). The Old Festival Hall has been extensively renovated since World War II and is a great place to see theater performances, plays and exhibitions of modern art.

Visit the Landmarks in Striesen and Blasewitz

East of Old Town, you will find the quarters of Striesen and Blasewitz. Take a stroll on the charming riverside walk and enjoy the fun mix of Grunderzeit villas and 1970s apartment buildings. Among these neighbourhoods in Dresden, enjoy an authentic German beer at one of the many beer gardens or dine in one of the many restaurants. Don't miss the Loschwitz Bridge, also known as the Blue Wonder, one of Germany's most recognizable landmarks.

Experience the Young, Hip Sudvorstadt

South of Old Town, you will find the home of the Technical University and University of Applied Sciences in Sudvorstadt. Many students live in the 1960s apartments and Grunderzeit townhouses found here. Enjoy a meal at one of the Sudvorstadt's many takeout restaurants, cafes or bars.

Shop and Dine in Innenstadt

Dresden's city center, Innenstadt is one of the best districts in Dresden for shopping. Head to the Prager Strasse and explore its many shops, fast-food restaurants, bars and clubs. You can enjoy a show at the cinema in Innenstadt as well. There is a light rail station (Dresden Webergasse) that makes for easy travel in and around Innenstadt.

Visiting any of these Dresden neighbourhoods will ensure a memorable visit. With an abundance of attractions, dining spots and shopping locales, there is something for everyone in the Dresden districts.
