Visiting Bandung – A City Guide
Around three hours’ drive from the Indonesian capital, Bandung is a revered weekend destination for Jakarta locals in pursuit of fantastic shopping, dining and hiking. Framed by three dramatic volcanoes and lush tea plantations, Bandung offers enticing nightlife, a trendy café scene and a multitude of nature-based activities.

Bandung: city layout and top attractions
Bandung may be spread out, but most attractions are centred on three compact areas. Jalan Braga is the busiest central point of reference, stretching north from a point close to the Masjid Raya Grand Mosque. To the north is Jalan Cihampelas, known for its many discount retail outlets. Just northeast is the Dago area, the leafiest and most gentrified suburb of all.

Markets, malls and upscale boutiques cater to every visitor, as do the many options for enjoying Sundanese delicacies. If you wish to enjoy a breath of fresh air, you’ll find nearby active volcanoes, pine forests and mountain lakes to be ideal day-trip destinations.

The concierge recommends…

  • Exploring Tahura, an extensive reserve in Dago Pakar, for tiered waterfalls, hidden caves and spectacular views over the city.
  • Bargaining for authentic Javanese batiks (textiles dyed using traditional Javanese methods) at Jalan Braga’s colourful local markets.
  • Admiring European-style architecture on a historic walking tour through the Dutch colonial city centre.

Eating Out in Bandung
The capital of Sundanese (West Javan) cuisine, Bandung is home to exclusive fine-dining options, enticing street food and everything in between. The most popular streets for dining are Jalan Braga and Jalan Cihampelas. For a more refined take on the local street-stall experience, head to Paskal Food Market on Jalan Pasirkaliki instead.

Sundanese cuisine distinguishes itself in its love of raw vegetables (a rarity in Indonesia), clean and fresh dishes and a particular weakness for salted fish and oncom, a type of fermented soybean cake. Freshly roasted Javanese coffee, one of Indonesia’s most popular international exports, is the city’s favourite beverage.

The chef recommends...

  • Nasi Timbel: A pocket of rice cooked in tender banana leaves and served alongside fried oncom and super spicy sambal chilli sauce.
  • Martabak: A rich and delectable fried pancake filled with either sweet or savoury ingredients. The corn and cheese variant is particularly sumptuous.
  • Soto Bandung: Every region of Indonesia boasts its own signature meat and vegetable soup (soto) and Bandung’s is especially tasty.
  • Durian Ice Cream: The famous stinky fruit is loathed by foreigners and loved by locals. For cultural-factor points alone, you should at least try the ice-cream version, which is surprisingly delicious.

Shopping in Bandung
A shopping mecca like no other, Bandung’s array of shopping options attracts Jakarta visitors in droves every weekend. They visit for better deals on jeans (Jalan Cihampelas is locally known as “Jeans Street”) and other clothing items, shoes and leather goods.

Factory outlets are Bandung’s most famous asset, since the city is home to Indonesia’s textile industry. Here’s where you’ll find the widest range and best prices on both local and international brands.

Foreign visitors will love the array of crafts, especially hand-carved wooden puppets, silver jewellery, batik fabric and superb paintings. Jalan Braga boasts many souvenir markets and shops (called toko) selling locally made handicrafts ranging from jewellery to furniture and everything in between.

Specialty shopping in Bandung

  • If you’re short on time and need a comprehensive one-stop-shopping haven, head to Ruma Mode, the best factory outlet in Bandung.
  • For a more relaxing shopping experience, check out Paris Van Jaya, a semi-open-air shopping mall brimming with great shops, dining options, a cinema and even indoor gardens.
  • Shopaholics will love exploring Simpang Dago‘s array of factory outlets.
  • To take home a taste of Java, visit Toko Kopi Aroma on Jalan Banceuy, a coffee shop selling high-quality Robusta beans for over 80 years.

Culture & Nightlife in Bandung
Steeped in Javanese culture and history, Bandung is home to stellar museums, historical monuments and plenty of architectural attractions. Aside from the Great Mosque and St Peter’s Cathedral, the two pillars of Java’s most prominent religions, Bandung’s city centre boasts many colonial heritage buildings. Avid museum lovers will enjoy the comprehensive meteorite and dinosaur displays at the Bandung Geological Museum. For a cultural experience, don’t miss a show at Saung Angklung Ugjo, Bandung’s premier centre for the performing arts.

Bandung’s nightlife offers plenty of options for visitors of all ages. Thanks to its healthy student population, Bandung enjoys a substantial clubbing scene. If you’re looking for something more serene, head to Jalan Braga for an evening stroll on a vibrant street.

Bandung’s best nightlife spots

  • You’ll find popular expats drinking and dining hotspots, like Rumah Miring (formerly Cloud 9) and Maja House, in the upmarket Dago area.
  • See Jalan Braga transformed into a nightlife mecca after dark, with large crowds of students converging here for karaoke, beers and socializing.
  • Catch the high-energy children’s performance at the Saung Angklung Ugjo, featuring local Javanese songs, traditional bamboo instruments and lavish costumes.

Leisure in Bandung
A visit to Bandung is punctuated by plenty of shopping and endless culinary feasting. Once you’ve had your fill of the city’s best attractions, however, you’d do well to explore the city’s spectacular surrounding natural wonders. This sets Bandung apart from other Indonesia cities, and makes it a delightful weekend escape destination.

Best day trips from Bandung

  • Relish a strong cup of Javanese coffee at the in-house cafe of the Dusun Bambu Family Leisure Park and soak up the impressive mountain scenery.
  • Hike up Tangkuban Perahu, an active stratovolcano just an hour north of the city, where you can stand at the rim of its live crater and see bubbling mud pools and steaming thermal springs.
  • Visit Kawah Putih, a sulphuric white crater lake south of Bandung, steeped in local folkloric legends.
  • Visit Malabar Tea Plantation one of the oldest plantations established by the Dutch. An incredibly relaxing place with great tea and even better scenery.

Excellent stay!
By KatrinT
Front office was hospitable and efficient. The view from the lobby and the room (mountain view golf room) was spectacular. It was worth the traffic jam we suffered on the way there. Variety was great [More] at breakfast but they need to upgrade the quality of the food. Room was clean and comfortable. It was really quiet. Too bad, the pool was not finished at the time. The hotel was pretty far from the city. So, beware when booking it. Overall, I recommend the hotel! [Less]

Great room hotel..
By Reza88
I booked this hotel for my second wedding anniversary with my wife. I bring my own car to the hotel, park at basement and we cannot find any elevator going to lobby, I ask at security and they said [More] it's not available yet. We've checked in without problem and even we got room upgrade to premier room, but sadly receptionist did not offer us any welcome drink. We arrive at my room at level 10, and the room was spacious, clean, covered with nice carpet, nice walking closet, very nice bathroom with large bathtube and rain shower, and day bed which is very comfortable. They even provide a crib for my baby. They generously served us an anniversary cake for us, thanks intercontinental. Breakfast in the morning was worth the money, various delicious food available in teh buffet and stall. One sad thing is me and my family cannot try the pool because it is still in renovation. [Less]
