Harn Museum of Art

Free to the public, the campus Art Museum represents major collections of Asian, African, modern, contemporary art and photography. Outside, the 24-foot “Hammering Man” greets visitors and once indoors, “Rory” a 6-foot tall horse made of scrap steel and tractor parts lures guests to explore further. The Museum offered printed guides that prompts you to participate in interactive activities making the cultural experience even more special.

Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo

3000 NW 83rd Street, Gainesville, Florida 32606

The Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo is Gainesville community zoo and the training facility for the Zoo Animal Technology Program. Situated on 10 forested acres, the Zoo allows guests to get up close and personal with some unique animals. There is a multi-stage playground for the kids and free wi-fi for parents. Events include Boo at the Zoo, a free trick-or-treat event every Halloween, Party for the Planet our Earth Day celebration each April.

KANAPAHA BOTANICAL GARDENS

4700 SW 58th Street, Gainesville, Florida 32608

One of Gainesville most popular destinations is a visit to the Kanapaha Botantical Gardens. Seasonal flowers, ferns and palms are just a few of its wonders, but the Children’s Garden was easily our favorite with special plants, fish ponds and waterfalls. Another vivid memory was the cathedral like Bamboo garden where we listened to the whistling wind create an amazingly peaceful sound. And don’t miss the giant Victoria water lilies. It’s a perfect place to pack a lunch and enjoy the splendor.
