Solid choice in Tokyo, near Akasaka
By Ramin72
The ANA IC Tokyo hotel is well located close to the Tameike-sanno station with two metro lines, and in walking distance to Akasaka, Roppongi or Midtown areas with shops, restaurants and bars. In [More] general, this is a good hotel for Tokyo due to its location. The general appearance is quite modern. It is also a rather big hotel with many rooms and guests. There are several restaurants and bars in the hotel. The rooms are well appointed; they are not very large though. As usual in Japan and especially in Tokyo, the rooms are rather small in comparison. This does not apply to all hotels in Tokyo, but the IC has rather smallish rooms even for their higher room categories in comparison to competition to other nearby locations and newer 5* hotels. There are also rooms, which have been renovated and very modern in appearance while other have a very classic look. The rooms are very clean and overall in good shape. There is nothing to complain. On the negative side: there is currently construction work going on at the high floors which is quite noise. It only takes place during a few hours during the daytime. However, if you want to take a nap after the jet lag, this might be a problem. I assume this is a temporary inconvenience. Having an IHG royal ambassador elite status, you get an upgrade of two categories. However, the upgrades are not perceivable. At least that was my feeling. This might be a higher floor, but not in overall room size are large room While most IC hotels provide their RA with an upgrade to a suite, this is not the case here. The good thing is the very nice lounge you get access to. The lounge is large, very nicely appointed, and has a very good breakfast and evening snack hour. Everything is very high class and overall one of the best lounges in the IC spectrum. Staff is very friendly. Unfortunately, the service is not consistent and can be surprising. As a Royal Ambassador you have early check-in and late checkout as a benefit. Arriving at 8:30am with pre-announcing that I would use the early check-in, the room was not ready. On the good side, they provided a waiting room, which was a decent alternative. Unfortunately, the waiting room was of better quality than the room that was eventually provided. It felt like a downgrade, quite unusual and a sign of bad planning/management. Very surprising for Japan, where people in the hospitality sector are usually very meticulous to the highest standards. Moreover, the hotel did not provide any RA benefits like the normally guaranteed room plate with fruits, chocolate, water and personalized present. There was nothing. Strangely enough, the same was the case two years before. During checkout, the responsible manager, Mr Sheppard, apologized that the original room was not available at check-in, which was a friendly and professional nod. Informed about the issue that no RA room benefits were provided during the stay, lead to another apology and the offer of 5000 IHG reward points for compensation. This is not very generous, but okay. However, these points never turned up! Another sign that there is a management problem and not enough care on details. Overall, this is a decent hotel and solid choice for Tokyo. The price-value was okay this time. For an IHG Royal Ambassador the provided care and the benefits are sub-standard for an IHG Intercontinental hotel. In comparison, the IC Tokyo Bay never had these issues and was more consistent with its service. However, the location of the Bay IC hotel might not suit everyone. Off to the IC in Berlin, Germany, next …. [Less]

Rooms are from the 90’s but I’m sure there are nicer rooms I just wasn’t in one. Food was spectacular! Smoking in bars and lobby was so gross. Super safe! [Less]
