Title
The Insider’s Guide to Cancún
Description

Cancún is best known for its white-sand beaches and clear Caribbean water, but there is so much more to explore when visiting this tropical destination. Beyond the Hotel Zone, you’ll find local markets, delicious Yucatecan food, archaeological sites filled with history, mangrove-lined lagoons, coral reefs, and easy day trips into the Riviera Maya.

Stay on the beach for a classic Cancún vacation, choose downtown for a more local feel, or head south to Puerto Morelos for a quieter coastal setting. IHG’s hotels across these areas give you a convenient base for exploring, relaxing, and making the most of your time in the region.

Booking directly also gives IHG One Rewards members access to program benefits, along with the Best Price Guarantee.

Description
Cancún has plenty to keep you busy, even if you never travel far from your hotel. Spend time at Playa Delfines. This broad public beach is known for its open views of the Caribbean and is a good spot for a morning walk or afternoon swim. Explore MUSA: The Museo Subacuático de Arte features underwater sculptures that have become part of the surrounding marine environment. Visit by snorkeling, diving, or glass-bottom boat. See El Rey Ruins – Maya ruins that sit inside the Hotel Zone, making them one of the easiest archaeological sites to visit during a beach trip.

Explore Nichupté Lagoon; boat tours travel through the lagoon’s mangroves and offer a different perspective on Cancún’s natural landscape. Take a trip to Isla Mujeres. You can catch the ferry for beaches, snorkeling, restaurants, and a change of scenery. And last, visit a local market. Downtown markets are useful for picking up crafts, souvenirs, snacks, and a taste of everyday Cancún.

Description

Cancún’s food scene is worth exploring beyond your hotel. Seafood is a natural choice along the coast, with ceviche, grilled fish, and other fresh dishes appearing on menus throughout the city.

Downtown is a good place to look for Yucatecan specialties such as cochinita pibil, panuchos, salbutes, and sopa de lima. Markets and casual restaurants offer a more relaxed dining experience, while the Hotel Zone has plenty of restaurants with Caribbean and lagoon views. For a laid-back evening, find a table near the water and settle in for dinner just as the sun starts to go down.

Description
  • Pack for warm weather: Lightweight clothing, swimwear, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are useful year-round.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen: It’s a good choice for snorkeling and other water activities.
  • Pack water shoes: They can come in handy at cenotes and rocky beaches.
  • Plan around the seasons: December through April is the busiest period and typically brings dry, comfortable weather. May and November tend to be quieter.
  • Check the forecast: Summer and early fall are warmer, so check local conditions before heading out and plan outdoor activities accordingly.

Getting Around

Arriving by air: Cancún International Airport (CUN) is about 20 to 30 minutes from much of the Hotel Zone, depending on traffic. Arrange an authorized airport taxi, private transfer, or hotel shuttle before your trip.

Taking the bus: Public buses run frequently along Boulevard Kukulcán and connect the Hotel Zone with downtown.

Using taxis: Taxis are widely available. Confirm the fare before starting your trip.

Renting a car: A rental car can be useful for visiting cenotes, archaeological sites, and towns along the Riviera Maya that are a bit further away.

Description
  • Beach time: Spend the day swimming, snorkeling, or relaxing on the sand.
  • Family-friendly fun: Stay close to beaches, restaurants, and activities that are easy to enjoy with kids.
  • Local food and culture: Explore downtown markets, neighborhood restaurants, and Yucatecan specialties like cochinita pibil and sikil pak.
  • Outdoor adventures: Go snorkeling, explore cenotes, kayak through mangroves, or visit nearby islands.
  • Easy sightseeing: Use Cancún as a base for exploring Maya ruins, coastal towns, and the Riviera Maya.

Description

Cancún is well positioned for exploring the surrounding region.

Isla Mujeres makes an easy island day trip, with beaches, snorkeling, and a relaxed town center. Puerto Morelos is a good choice for reef activities and a quieter coastal experience. For history, plan a longer day at Chichén Itzá or Tulum. You can also spend time in Valladolid, a colonial city known for its architecture, food, and nearby cenotes. Nature lovers can look into excursions to Isla Contoy, a protected island with beaches and important bird habitats.

  • Chichén Itzá (2.5 hours) — A worldrenowned Maya site; visit early for cooler temperatures.
  • Valladolid (2 hours) — A colonial town with cenotes and a charming central square.
  • Puerto Morelos (40 minutes) — Calm reef snorkeling and a relaxed smalltown feel.
  • Isla Contoy (boat excursion) — A protected nature reserve with pristine beaches.

Description

Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera)
Boulevard Kukulcán runs between the Caribbean and Laguna Nichupté, putting Cancún’s beaches, restaurants, shops, and nightlife close at hand. It’s also a convenient base for Playa Delfines, MUSA, El Rey Ruins, and ferries to Isla Mujeres.

Downtown Cancún
Downtown offers a more local side of Cancún, with markets, casual restaurants, plazas, and neighborhood shops. Visit Mercado 28 for crafts and souvenirs, try some Yucatecan food, and take the bus to the Hotel Zone when you want a beach day.

Puerto Morelos
South of Cancún, Puerto Morelos has a quieter coastal feel and easy access to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Spend time on the beach, snorkel near the reef, or use the town as a base for exploring the Riviera Maya.
