So we wanted to see something at the Englert theater in Iowa City, that particular act was something I've wanted to do for years! So the weekend it falls on there was a football game between a couple
colleges, so I was priced out of even mediocre rooms in Iowa City. And Coralville. And Cedar Rapids. Which led me to Waterloo, and I'm glad, was a great property and a lovely stay! This was not the cheapest place (although I got a friends and family rate because a good friend works for IHG, which was very helpful!), but even at regular rate, it's great value for money. No breakfast, which honestly I looked at and considered so many different places I must have confused it with a place that had it, but we had a kitchen, so we just bought some food and made it. The kitchen was super handy to have (with a dishwasher!). The pool was a little cold, but the hot tub is what I care about anyway, and the tub in the room was deep as hotel tubs go, so that was great too!
The only cons:
The bottom of the bathroom door trim was stained, and our room only had one fork (when we asked we were given two more, there were only two of us, but we were eating half the meals in because we could, so we needed at least two!). There was a loud group the night we came in, and they were evicted during the night. We were far enough down that I didn't hear them from the room and I didn't hear them get evicted, but a chatty employee made a point of telling us they got evicted and when, which wasn't really our business. The last thing is that items that are free "courtesy" items at most hotels at that price we paid $4 for (a comb, one toothbrush and a small toothpaste), although I guess this could be offset with the free laundry, which I didn't find the time to take advantage of.
That's it. Otherwise it was clean, everyone we encountered was pleasant, the room was comfortable (I would LOVE one of those recliners in my house!), the kitchen is nicer than mine at home (although I DO have four burners and an oven).
The clerk who checked me in was SO polite, had questions about living in Minneapolis, and was very kind in directing us to food/liquor/etc when we arrived on Friday.
Other reviews mentioned highway noise, and with the window cracked we couldn't hear a thing. Unless you're camping seven turns off the interstate, there WILL be freeway noise, that's just the deal. These people would complain and not stay someplace if it was hidden in some residential or rural area seven turns off the highway. I wouldn't pay any attention to anyone complaining about highway noise, they obviously have impossibly high expectations.
We will definitely come stay again probably this winter. The lack of kids on a weekend was absolutely remarkable and we had a great time! Waterloo was a fun place to stay, and although half a tank of gas to the venue wasn't great, I know we saved a lot of money between eating in and staying farther out, since there isn't anything else we needed in Iowa City.
