Horrible Experience

By

November 14, 2018

I am a loyal rewards member # 956532581. For as far back as I can remember, I almost always have stayed at Holiday Inn Express on my travels . . . even before I thought to become a rewards member. Holiday Inn Express is my favorite place to stay because the room is always clean, the bed and bedding are comfortable, the breakfast is great, and the staff is exceptional. THAT IS WHY I AM SO DISAPPOINTED WITH MY RECENT STAY AT THE HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS & SUITES, MIAMI AIRPORT EAST!!!!

After making my reservation online for 11/6/2018 – 11/7/2017, I called the hotel to inquire as to whether they have a shuttle from the Miami Airport. I was told to just call upon my arrival and the hotel shuttle would pick us up. After retrieving our bag at the luggage claim carousel, my wife called the hotel and spoke with Ashley (I think that was her name). Ashley asked what number door we were at and my wife told her that we had just gotten our luggage were at area “4”. Ashley said, “Do me a favor and go to 6 and I will pick you up.” We walked over to area 6 and waited….and waited….and waited. After waiting for over ½ hour, I called the hotel and was asked, “Don’t you see the driver?” I said that I didn’t and was asked what number I was at. I said I was at 6 as instructed. I was told the driver would be there. So I waited again. Then I called again and was told that the driver would be there. Then, someone called me and asked if I was upstairs. Apparently, the Holiday Inn shuttle doesn’t pick up at the baggage claim door 6 which is at the lower level. It picks up at the door 6 on the level above. It certainly would have been helpful if Ashley had told my wife that in the beginning. We never were at the Miami airport and had no idea that there was more than one level where hotel shuttles pick up passengers.

Needless to say, we were hot and tired after travelling since 6 AM and waiting so long in the heat at the airport. When we checked into the hotel, the desk clerk (Ashley???) told us we had been upgraded to a suite for being rewards members. Since it was already VERY late and we were leaving early the next morning, extra rewards points would have been appreciated more than an unnecessary room upgrade. She handed us 2 key cards saying that 1 was the room key and the other was for ELECTRIC. That was a new one on us!!! Confused, my wife asked her what that meant and the desk clerk said rudely, “Well if you want lights or air conditioning, you’ll need that key. This is a green hotel!” Not wanting to deal with her rudeness any longer, we just shrugged to each other, picked up our bags and took the elevator to our room. We opened the door to a completely dark room and had no idea what to do next. There was another hotel guest walking in the hall that I asked. He said there’s a slot in the bathroom to insert the card to get the electric to work. We walked blindly into the bathroom and started feeling around on the walls finding nothing. Eventually, we did find the slot next to the room door. I guess the man I asked didn’t have a suite so his slot was in the bathroom. I can’t believe that the desk clerk didn’t explain the procedure to us since it was obvious that we didn’t know about an electric key.

This experience, although horrible, has not soured us on staying at Holiday Inn Express hotels, In fact, a few days later, we stopped along our travels and stayed in a lovely one in Fulton, MS and we have a future reservation at one in Fayetteville, AR. However, when I travel to Miami in the future, I will never stay at the Miami Airport East Holiday Inn Express. It was a horrible experience and I will be writing a review expressing that so other travelers to Miami will be aware.
