Ideal situation for our visit as we were attending a show at the playhouse theatre which was easy walking distance. On street parking if you can get a space is free over the weekend.
Room comfortable and spacious with a well kitted out bathroom.

Wonderful room, friendly staff

This is an unusual Crowne Plaza in that it isn't a modern, purpose built building. That's one of the things that makes it special. The rooms are lovely - larger than average with excellent facilities, spotlessly clean and mostly beautifully modernised. Rooms at the back look out across the garden and up Calton Hill so are absolutely peaceful. At the front the view is to Leith and the Firth of Forth but they could be noisy owing to the cobbled street outside - I have always managed to get a room at the back so can't comment. The air conditioning wasn't working properly on arrival but an engineer was standing in Reception when I went down to query it and he had it sorted in about two minutes - great service!
The staff are always friendly and efficient but the receptionists could do more to advise on hotel facilities etc. I had to drag every bit of information out of them - I was not offered a table reservation for dinner, a breakfast voucher or even any directions to my room! It seemed as if they wanted to deal with the paperwork and move on to something else. Lisa, the Reception Manager, was on duty when I checked out early the next morning and she was excellent though (even at 5am!) - very enthusiastic about the hotel and its facilities and she really did everything to "sell" the hotel and make me want to return.
It's a shame they don't upsell the restaurant as the food is superb and the menu a bit different to the normal "chain hotel" offering, - you don't see pheasant breast as a starter too often (and it was superb!).
The service was badly lacking this time (but hasn't been on my two previous stays) and I felt I had to make a complaint about it. I was the only guest for the first half hour and yet my starter took all that time to arrive. During the wait I wasn't offered any bread, and yet the next table to arrive were offered what appeared to be a lovely choice of breads. The main course was similarly slow in arriving, I wasn't offered another glass of wine and eventually I gave up on the cheese course and liqueur coffee I had ordered. I'm not sure what went wrong but it needs to be addressed. As I say, hopefully this was an isolated incident as it hasn't happened on my two previous visits.
Overall, I will return as the hotel is generally superb but I hope they sort out the service in the restaurant - and then "sell" it to guests so more make use of it!
