Los Angeles Travel Guide Intro

Traveling to Los Angeles?
Title
Here is IHG’s Complete Guide to the City of Angels
Description

Everything about Los Angeles is a pleasant surprise when you see the city for all it’s worth. The City of Angels boasts 263 days (on average) of sun every year with mostly mild temperatures and has an abundance of restaurants, cultural events and activities, bike paths, nature trails, beaches, shows, and shopping to offer. When skies are blue, L.A. days feel endless in the best way possible. Whether you choose to go for a hike or take a dip in the ocean, read a book on the sand, explore arts and history at local museums, or take in the varied architecture (it ranges from Mid Century Modern to Art Deco and Craftsman to Spanish Mission Revival), this city provides the most well-rounded travel experience, even more than meets the eye. So slather on that sunblock, fill your biggest reusable water bottle, and get ready to marvel in the La La Land trip of a lifetime with our detailed guide to the city focused on some of its biggest neighborhoods.

Sort Order

Description

Downtown LA is a thriving cultural and commercial hub with a mix of historic architecture, modern skyscrapers, and diverse neighborhoods. Visitors can discover cultural institutions like the Broad, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Japanese American National Museum in addition to shopping and dining in the Arts District, Little Tokyo, Chinatown, or on historic Olvera Street. If visiting college friends or family at UCLA or USC, DTLA is a great place to stay. During basketball season, catch a Lakers game at Crypto.com Arena (formerly known as Staples Center).

Where to Stay:

In the heart of the city, Hotel Indigo Los Angeles Downtown offers a unique urban retreat for travelers seeking to experience the authentic DTLA. With spacious guest rooms and big windows to take in the views, Hotel Indigo offers a balanced blend of comfort, convenience, and local flair. And it’s even walking distance to multiple museums like the Broad and the MOCA, as well as FIGAT7TH, an outdoor mall with a food hall, shops, and even a fitness center. Grab a bite at Metropole Bar+Kitchen right off the hotel lobby or head up to the 18th floor for small plates and drinks with a view at 18 Social.

Elevate your stay in the City of Angels at the Intercontinental Los Angeles Downtown, which is inside one of the most iconic structures in the state, the Wilshire Grand—this is the tallest building west of Chicago. This luxurious property features a rooftop pool, spa, and multiple dining venues run by award-winning chefs. It also offers unparalleled views of the city skyline and easy access to top attractions, dining, and entertainment. Here, grab breakfast at Dekkadance, steak and seafood at La Boucherie, or for 360-degree views, make a reservation at Spire 73, the tallest open-air bar in the Western Hemisphere. Make sure to check out the Grammy Museum, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the historic Angels Flight Railway across the street from Grand Central Market, and all the restaurants, boutiques, and museums in Little Tokyo. Everything in DTLA is right at your fingertips.

Located in Museum Row on Miracle Mile, Kimpton Hotel Wilshire is a boutique property close to the Grove and some of the best museums and galleries in the city, like the LACMA, La Brea Tar Pits, and the Petersen Automotive Museum. The LEED Silver certified green hotel is home to Videre Restaurant & Bar, a gorgeous poolside and rooftop restaurant with an all-day California Coastal menu and craft cocktails—like the Beverly Hills Remedy and the Wilshire Old Fashioned—worth writing home about.

Where to Eat & Drink:

One of the oldest restaurants in LA, Philippe the Original opens early and closes late. If you can only get one thing here, go for the famous French dip sandwich. The Original Pantry Cafe since 1924 is open round-the-clock serving classic American dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Diners tend to go for breakfast dishes like biscuits and gravy or the Pantry’s Famous Pancakes. Visit Grand Central Market (which is over a century old!) for plenty of delicious food options that’ll be sure to make everyone happy—everything from pastries and German sausages to oysters, fruit smoothies, pupusas, and more. And then the family-owned, James Beard-winning Guelaguetza has been serving incredible Oaxacan dishes every day except Monday since 1994.

Description

Situated along the beautiful Pacific coastline, Santa Monica and Venice Beach offer a relaxed surf and skate-friendly vibe with plenty of outdoor activities. Visitors can stroll along the Santa Monica Pier, bike or rollerblade along the Venice Beach Boardwalk, or enjoy outdoor dining and shopping on Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Malibu is a quick and easy drive away if you want to visit the Getty Villa, the Malibu Pier, one of many beaches, or Malibu Country Mart, which is filled with boutiques, wellness shops, great restaurants, and even a wine tasting room.

Where to Stay:

Just six miles from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and near the Santa Monica Pier, the brand-new Regent Santa Monica Beach is a luxurious oceanfront hotel showcasing the best of the Westside. The first Regent property in the US, the hotel will feature a beachfront pool deck, destination spa, and a celebrity chef-run restaurant.

Where to Eat and Drink:

Although there are locations all over town, the KazuNori in Santa Monica is fabulous for fast-casual sushi and hand rolls where you can watch the chefs make your food right in front of you. A small sushi counter restaurant, KazuNori doesn’t take reservations and often has a line. Try to visit outside of peak dining hours for a better chance at snagging a seat quickly. For coastal Italian food, head to Elephante, where the dishes and the drinks are just as good as the ocean views. Hop over to Venice for a bite at Gjelina or Felix Trattoria, both on Abbot Kinney (reservations are recommended). Gjelina Take Away, known to locals as just “GTA” is the perfect alternative for coffee, pizza, sandwiches, and more if you prefer take-out.

Description

If you really want to take Los Angeles in like a tourist, who’s to stop you? Hollywood is a great place to start. As the center of the entertainment industry, Hollywood is famous for iconic landmarks like the Hollywood Walk of Fame, TCL Chinese Theatre, and the Hollywood Sign. Visitors can get tickets for live music or comedy clubs on the Sunset Strip, catch a show at the Pantages Theatre, or hike through Griffith Park for the most unreal sunrise/sunset views. Keep your eyes peeled and you may even see some deer in the nature areas.

Where to Stay:

One of the most incredible things about a stay in LA is that more often than not the hotels have the most amazing rooftops. The Kimpton Everly Hotel is no exception. Guest rooms here have views of the Hollywood Hills or the city’s skyline in addition to Casper mattresses, which means you’ll get the best sleep and wake up more refreshed than ever.  The fifth floor Skyline Sundeck has a pool and outdoor lounge where you can sunbathe and order drinks–a fun perk is that if you head up there Monday through Thursday, you’ll be greeted with a complimentary glass of bubbly. Dine at Jane Q, the hotel’s coffee bar and restaurant, or get dressed up to go order cocktails at Ever Bar, which boasts floor-to-ceiling views of Capitol Records, downtown Hollywood, and the Hills. If you want to head on a scenic walk or hike near the hotel, it’s situated right at the foot of Beachwood Canyon.

Where to Eat and Drink:

If you’re craving delicious Italian cuisine with a modern twist, reserve a table at Osteria Mozza. For cozy French food in the area, book a spot at Petit Trois. Since 1919, the historic Musso & Frank Grill has been the go-to steakhouse where classic American food and martinis reign supreme. Once known as the 101 Coffee Shop, Clark Street Diner serves classic American diner food, like challah French toast, corned beef hash, and huevos rancheros, in a mid-century space. The restaurant has even been featured in shows and movies, including Swingers, Gilmore Girls, and Entourage.

Description

Known for high-end shopping, celebrity sightings, and upscale dining, Beverly Hills and West Hollywood exude old-school glamor and sophistication. Visitors can shop along Rodeo Drive, tour celebrity homes in the Hollywood Hills, or dine at world-renowned restaurants on the Sunset Strip.

Where to Stay:

The five-star Kimpton La Peer Hotel is tucked away on an unassuming street in West Hollywood. Not far from Melrose and WeHo’s design district, the La Peer features a poolside lounge, rooftop event space, a shop that sells goods by local makers, and art galleries with revolving work throughout the common areas. Want to dine on property? Ladyhawk by chef Charbel Hayek pays tribute to Eastern Mediterranean ingredients through dishes like Shawarma Skirt Steak and Olive-Crusted Rack of Lamb. Share a mezze platter with friends while you sip on a Middle Eastern-inspired cocktail, like the Persimmon Sour.

Another beautiful hotel in the area is the Kimpton Hotel Palomar Beverly Hills. Located in the heart of the Golden Triangle, this boutique hotel combines modern elegance with old Hollywood glamor. Enjoy stylish accommodations, a rooftop pool with panoramic views, a lobby bar, and even a retro-inspired Game Room just minutes from Rodeo Drive and other iconic attractions. Hungry? Make a reservation at Double Take inside the hotel, which hosts brunch, lunch, dinner, and happy hour, and features a mouthwatering menu of California comfort food.

Where to Eat and Drink:

For fantastic Oaxacan dishes and the biggest mezcal collection in the country, head to Madre. The first Night + Market location is still popping in West Hollywood. Book a table for James Beard-nominated Thai food in a colorful, happy setting. In Beverly Hills, The Polo Lounge is a legendary restaurant that offers upscale American cuisine and a glam atmosphere. Enjoy California cooking and Sunday jazz brunch on the gorgeous patio, where the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Fred Astaire were once regulars. If searching for celebs, grab a table at the Ivy, where the terrace is almost as charming as the actors you’ll encounter here.

Description

Northeast Los Angeles (also known as NELA), which encompasses multiple neighborhoods from Atwater Village to Mount Washington, offers a mix of artistic flair, historic architecture, and diverse communities. Visitors can explore the trendy shops and eateries along York Boulevard in Highland Park, visit the historic Occidental College campus in Eagle Rock, or hike through the scenic trails of Debs Park. Glendale Boulevard in Atwater Village is always filled with coffee shops, bookstores, kids’ boutiques, wine bars and more.

Where to Stay:

Discover comfort and convenience at the brand new Holiday Inn Express & Suites Glendale Downtown, which has parking for guests and a pool. Located in the heart of Glendale, this modern hotel offers complimentary breakfast and easy access to top attractions like the Glendale Galleria, Americana at Brand, and Griffith Park. Whether you're traveling for business or leisure, this property provides a seamless stay in the heart of Northeast LA.

Where to Eat and Drink:

There are so many great neighborhood spots that locals love here. In Atwater Village, grab breakfast at Village Bakery or Los Feliz Cafe. If you’re craving Mediterranean food, Dune or Momed are both perfect. Since 1922, the Scottish pub Tam O'Shanter has been serving prime rib and cocktails in a Tudor-style space. In Glendale, you can’t miss Din Tai Fung, Dinah’s Chicken (since 1967), or La Cubana, a family-owned Cuban spot since 1973. In Highland Park, Joy serves delicious Taiwanese dishes and Mariscos el Faro is the perfect food truck stop for ceviche, tostadas, and more. The plant-based Burgerlords is a great alternative to In-N-Out, especially for those who don’t eat meat.

Description

The San Fernando Valley is a sprawling suburban region known for its entertainment industry studios, shopping malls, and outdoor recreation areas. Visitors can explore Universal Studios Hollywood in Studio City, shop at the fancy malls in Sherman Oaks, or hike in the Santa Monica Mountains. The gem of “the Valley” is Ventura Boulevard, an approximately 13-mile strip that runs all the way from Studio City to Woodland Hills—much of it is walkable and filled with shops, spas, markets, and restaurants.

Where to Stay:

Experience comfort and convenience at Holiday Inn Express North Hollywood - Burbank Area. Situated in a prime location, this hotel offers modern amenities, parking for guests, complimentary breakfast, a pool, and easy access to top attractions like Universal Studios Hollywood and the Warner Bros. Studio. Whether you're here for work or play, this is a great stay in the heart of the entertainment capital for families and anyone else wanting to experience the magic of the amusement parks and studios in the area.

Where to Eat and Drink:

Dining options abound in the Valley, but these are a few of our favorites: For nearly 70 years, the family-owned Casa Vega has been making Mexican food with love. A late night meal and margaritas are always a good idea here. For the best paninis and pastas in the area, the answer is always Il Tramezzino. For some of the most iconic views in the Valley, order cocktails and prepare to watch the sunset at the hilltop Castaway. And there’s plenty of sushi spots to choose from on Ventura Boulevard, but you can never go wrong with Sugarfish, Katsu-ya Studio City, or KazuNori.

Description

We don’t really know what to call this collection of neighborhoods (the Mapping L.A. project of the Los Angeles Times considers Los Feliz to be part of central LA), but we do know we love it. Dive into Silver Lake's hipster haven, where artisanal coffee shops, indie boutiques, and trendy eateries line the streets, or explore the cultural hub of Los Feliz, home to historic theaters, Spanish architecture, eclectic bookstores, and a diverse culinary scene ranging from cozy cafes to more high-end eateries. You’ll also want to wander through the bohemian streets of Echo Park, where you'll find the picturesque Echo Park Lake, local art galleries, and a dynamic mix of dining options, from gourmet food trucks to innovative fusion. Catch a baseball game at Dodgers Stadium or take a hike in Elysian park. Whether you're seeking artistic inspiration, to be immersed in nature, or simply a taste of authentic LA living, these neighborhoods offer an abundance of experiences all within walking, biking, and driving distance of each other.

Where to Stay:

This neighborhood doesn’t have its own IHG hotel, but if you’d like to stay nearby, either the recently added Holiday Inn Express & Suites Glendale Downtown or The Kimpton Everly Hotel in Hollywood are both close and convenient.

Where to Eat and Drink:

Cozy and classic Italian in Los Feliz, Little Dom’s is known for prix fixe Monday dinners when a lot of other local restaurants are closed. You can’t beat a three-course meal for $25 per person. You can add a bottle of house wine or bottled beer to your order. Bacari Silverlake offers al fresco Venetian-inspired dining. Small plates, pizza, and dessert are a must paired with a cocktail or mocktail. Need to get your veggie serving in? Make your way to Botanica, which is along the Silver Lake Reservoir. Here, seasonal produce is used in all dishes with a focus on regenerative agriculture and an exclusively natural wine list. Visit Guisados in Echo Park for a (mostly) gluten-free menu of traditional homestyle braises on handmade tortillas. The cochinita pibil taco is delicious, but there are a few vegetarian and even vegan options available on the menu as well.

Description

Located northeast of Downtown LA, Pasadena is known for its historic charm, cultural attractions, and beautiful gardens. Visitors can explore Old Pasadena's quaint streets lined with shops and restaurants, visit the Norton Simon Museum or the Huntington Library, or shop at the monthly Rose Bowl Flea Market, which is the best place in the city to find cool crafts, furniture, vintage apparel, antiques, and other goods.

Where to Stay:

At the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Pasadena - Los Angeles, comfort meets convenience. Located on Colorado Ave. and just a few miles from Downtown Pasadena, this property has on-site parking and offers guests daily complimentary breakfast, as well as easy access to iconic attractions like the Rose Bowl Stadium and Old Town Pasadena.

Where to Eat and Drink:

Indulge in rich, flavorful Southeast Asian-inspired cuisine at Bone Kettle, where the dishes range from kabocha bisque and bone marrow butter to spicy papaya salad and oxtail dumplings. In what used to be a caretaker’s cottage in the 1800s, the Raymond 1886 serves innovative American fare in a historic craftsman-style bungalow. Pop in for happy hour to enjoy tater tots, sliders, and discounted wine, beer and cocktails. At Fishwives, you’ll want to savor every bite of the fresh coastal seafood on the menu. Here, sit at the bar and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and locally-sourced ingredients, whether it’s Pacific oysters from the raw bar or hot plates like fried oysters on deviled eggs, the dungeness crab roll, and branzino. Last but not least, step back in time to enjoy nostalgic treats at Fair Oaks Pharmacy and Soda Fountain. The beloved South Pasadena institution has operated since 1915, and is the perfect place to end the day with ice cream sodas, hand-dipped milkshakes, coffees, and floats.

Description

LA is a driving city through and through and discovering the city is an adventure in motion. Here, you’ll need a rental car or a plan for getting around that includes rideshare, walking, biking, or the bus. The LA Metro is also an option depending on where you stay, but not the easiest form of transportation for first time riders/visitors. For travelers flying into the city, the FlyAway bus offers an affordable and convenient option, whisking passengers from LAX to stations in downtown LA or Van Nuys for just under $10 per person. If you choose to walk from one destination to the next, the sun-drenched paths of Griffith Park or the scenic routes along the Pacific coastline offer plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the city's natural beauty on foot.
